The bearing in the belt tensioner in my 1987 Delta 88 is noisy and has excessive play.
I can't go to the local junkyard and get another one, the nearest one is probably 3000 miles away! :)
I intend to remove the pulley and replace the bearing, it's worthwhile in my circumstances.

I'm guessing the pulley bolt is left hand thread?. I don't want to turn it the wrong way and break it. If it breaks going the right way, well that's too bad.

Thanks in anticipation,
Roger.

please inspect the pulley rotation direction under normal operation. the pulley should always spin in the fasten direction so you will apply force in the unfasten( opposite) direction.

so if the pulley is rotating clockwise, you will go counter clockwise

it gets weird when the pulley is rotating counter clockwise and you remove it by applying clockwise direction. which is counter intuitive cause that is usually the fasten direction but not in that specific pulley application

The pulley does rotate counter clockwise.
I tried turning it clockwise but it was very tight.
Now I can go put a bigger wrench on it knowing I'm not making thins worse.

Thank you.

Roger.

On old corroded bolts try tightening them first to break them, then loosen.

A bit of effort with a longer 18mm wrench and off it came. It is lh thread btw.
A sharp tap with a hammer and drift and out popped the bearing.
id - 17mm
od - 40mm
width - 12mm
So off to the local bearing supplier in the morning, or £1.73 (about $2.40) from ebay.

Roger.

The new bearing arrived in the post today. £1.30 ($1.65) including shipping to my door. :2thumbup:
Ten minutes later I have silent running again.

A replacement pulley would have cost £7.32 + shipping and duties from Rock Auto.
I'm not complaining about their price, just pleased it was such a cheap and easy fix.

Roger.
