Hi guys,

The time has come to do the radiator on my 96 SSEi. I have the engine oil cooler on my car. The lines leak and have been needing replacement, the radiator with the oil cooler line fittings is like $100 more at Autozone, and I'm not even sure the oil cooler is terribly helpful on this engine anyway. I'm thinking about just getting the regular replacement rad and removing the cooler lines. So I could do it 2 ways- use threaded brass plugs with perhaps some orange RTV on them in the oil filter adapter, or go to the JY and get an oil filter adapter off an L67 without the oil cooler option and figure out where the hell I put that weird oil filter adapter gasket I have.

I could be all proper and get new lines and the correct rad from RockAuto, but it's not a show car and it kind of seems like a bunch of extra money to spend with little gain. PLUS, big plus, I am really hoping to do this over the holidays and I'm sure RockAuto will not be able to get me that stuff in time.

Thoughts? Ideas?

I haven't really looked to closely but I thought the oil cooler lines attached to a spin-on adapter to the end of the oil filter bracket, it was an add-on part not a custom bracket? If so, it makes it easier to bypass at least.

Just a side comment, that's crazy it's a $100 markup vs. RockAuto!

You should be fine without the cooler. ^^ as mentioned the cooler casting is a seperate part that can be removed. But, you'll still need a shorter center threaded hollow bolt. The oil cooler version's bolt is longer, holding the cooler casting to the regular adapter. (not sure what that bolt is called)

If you're going to be down at your parent's over the holidays and can wait, I'm pretty sure I have a few oil adapters burred in my basement you could take that bolt from.

Ditching the set up will not hurt it at all.. 96 was the last year for the oil cooler on the H body.

Oh that's great! Thanks everyone! Mike, I would totally take you up on this, but funny story... since I made this post, I got a concussion and have been banned from the garage for the weekend lol! Shame too, it's so incredibly nice out.... I'll have to do this job in a few weeks in less hospitable circumstances. Thanks again for the info, very helpful.

Not funny. What did you do? Stand up when you should have ducked? Get well soon. No fun being banned from anything, especially the garage and cars. - BC

Fell off my galloping, bucking horse lol! Was wearing a helmet. Mark said I had no short term memory for a couple hours, it was like 50 first dates

Back on topic, since I am not much fit for junkyarding right now, if anyone has a bolt or adapter sans cooler I would love to buy it!

LOTS of Mods
Rach your Oil Cooler should have a spin on/off Adapter plate to the filter adapter.

I will gladly take the adapter and oil lines off your hands
