First off, there are no 'tricks' to replacing it. Unplug it (squeeze the connector to mis-shape it, then pull it off), then use a socket or wrench to remove it. You'll lose some coolant, so have the new sensor nearby. It's in the water jacket.

Secondly, why are you replacing it?

Third, please don't post mechanical problems in General Chat. Use the correct mechanical section. I'll move this one to the 1992-1999 section for you.

I don't think it's in the water jacket. 93's is on the front center under the exhaust manifold, right?

It's on the back side of the motor. I got it out. Getting it back in - that's the issue. Will work on it again tomorrow. Any suggestions? :btruestory:

The reason to replace it - I got a code that said my issue was a knock sensor of a bad ecm ground. I initially thought the knock sensor would be an easy try. I broke off the connector when trying to remove it. Since then, I'm back to the an ECM issue. Another related problem - the digital compass and guages are going nutty. Oil pressure very high on the guage. But normal with a mechanical guage. Research tells me it could be the A/D switch in the PROM/ECM. OR, I DO have a losse ground that causing the guages to work irratically. Before I do anything, I have to get the knock sensor installed.

Did any coolant come out? I remember there's a threaded plug deep in the hole, but I don't remember if there were other passages in there.

My 94 se knock sensor is on the front side of the engine, in the block, right near the starter. 1-wire connection. No coolant came out when I replaced it. It was a "blind" hole. Is the SSEi engine THAT different?

I have replaced probably 20-30 knock sensors in my life as a mechanic. Never lost any fluids.
