just wondering is an icebox streetable or is it mainly for race only cars?? i'm gonna be getting my air-to-air intercooler for my turbo in the spring, just thought i'd throw out the idea of running an icebox? i'll also be running alcohol injection too if that makes any difference..

I'm no turbo or i/c expert, but how will you add ice to the icebox while driving around? I thought that was just for cooling off between track runs?

An icebox doesn't seem practical for a DD. For consistancy, I'd go with an intercooler. Maybe have provisions for an icebox at the track?

yeah, thats kinda what i was thinking, just wanted to see if there has been anybody who has tried an icebox on a daily driven car. i know it doesn't seem practical due to the fact up having to keep ice in it all the time.... the icebox i'm referring to is a heat exchanger inside of a box in the engine compartment that the intake air gets forced through before entering the engine, inside the heat exchanger would be a cold liquid flowing through by means of a pump and the actual "box of ice" in the trunk or something with the lines running in and around the ice... after writing this i see that it is definetly a track only thing, what with all the plumbing and wiring of pump. however if i were to remain non-intercooled for the street and just have the system in place all i would have to do at the track is throw some ice in the box and turn on the pump? but on the street i would be limited to a lower boost level. but with a achly injection i could still run 13-14 psi with 0 kr... just a thought.. i think i'll be going intercooled just for the ease of install and reliablility..

If I'm not mistaken, you are likely running an air-to-air intercooler? An icebox isn't as practical in that setup as it would be in an air-water intercooler.


We need some clarification on that, but the answer to your main question is no, it's not really 'streetable' or 'daily driving' with an icebox. The ice melts rather quickly, the box will have to be drained, then refilled.

If you do this, and you put your car on a dragstrip, make D A M N sure the box doesn't leak. They don't like water dripping at the start line. Or any other liquid for that matter.

I'd do an air to air. Much more efficient, because the liquid in the system heats up, whereas an air to air always gets fresh (relatively cold) air flowing through it. Outside air is only going to be a maximum of a hundred degrees on a bad day. The liquid in the system could get much hotter, upwards of water boiling point. For a DD turbo car, Air to Air is the way to go. If this was a track only car, this would be a different story, however, because you only need it for that short burst down the track, and the water doesn't have time to get very hot.

Water is also forbidden. Many cars at the strip don't use the water box, and drive around it. They don't want water on their tires, and that includes in the staging lanes or at the start line.

Even a car that goes through the water box is forbidden from dripping any liquids (whether that be lubricants, coolant, or just plain water) at the start line. The start line is dry, and is kept that way. For this reason, AC is not allowed at the track, as condensation drips off AC parts under the hood.
