so, main question, what type of muffler does everyone use? none of that ricer *shoot*, i want a nice, formal rumble. i know a V6 is never gonna sound like a V8, but i want to get close. i already know what type of tips i want (thanks to you willwren!), but i still want good referrals for mufflers.

i know a lot of you guys have done this several times, so i was wondering what everyone uses! i am really interested in doing this sometime soon (and i mean VERY soon), but i want the best sound. i'm gonna have a professional do it (unless someone near st. cloud wants to do it for me :) )

Check out my cardomain page. www.cardomain.com/id/ssei95 I had a camaro v8 Magnaflo muffler, 3" pipe (way too big for most cars here) and some nice rolled tips. Somewhere there is a sound byte of it floating around.. Alot of incar drone, but a MEAN V8 rumble at idle.

I have a magnaflow high flow cat (ignore the electric exhaust cutout before it), Magnaflow resonator, and Mag muffler.

Start with the magnaflow muffler, keep the stock resonator, and go with a magnaflow hi-flow cat if you feel like it. The cat you'll feel in power. The muffler will be only sound.

On my '89 I've got a Magnaflow hi-flow cat and a Flowmaster muffler. It sounds very nice but I think I'm going to go all Magnaflow on my '88.

I used an oem f-body (camaro/firebird) muffler with high flow cat, stock resonator. It gave a nice rumble at idle, nice tone at street driving, and no drone at highway and freeway cruising.

well, it sounds like odds are in favor of the magnaflow setup! so (and i know i'm really stretching it here) does anyone have any extra new (or slightly used) magnaflow stuff that i could buy from them? or am i just gonna have to ebay it or something like that...

why do you have a Mag resonator? just to keep things all Magnaflow, or does a Mag resonator acutally change anything?

Here is a video of ten SSEi's. My car is the 5th car back, all of the cars(10) are L67's.
Mine has a nice deep sound. This is the only sound clip of my Wife's car. There is a video of the car somewhere with a full moon. :booty:

Sounds darn good, both inside and out. The mufflers are Hooker Aero Chamber(6 years old) with an Moroso Spiral Flow(3') for a resonator. If I had to get new mufflers today I would get the Hooker Max Flow mufflers. The Moroso did not change the "tone" of my exhaust at all, but it did get rid of most if not all of the drone that I had and it took about 6db's off of the "volume".

I don't know what engine you have, if you could put the trim of your car in your signature, that would help.

This is a quote from Scott Stutler(engineer) of DynoMax
" For any given power output and displacement, a generic sizing chart can get you in the ballpark when choosing exhaust-pipe diameter. However, engines equipped with power adders have a different set of needs. "If you're running a "turbo" or "supercharger", there's no such thing as an exhaust that's to big," Scott explains. For forced induction, "the bigger the better". "In a race application, on a nitrous motor, the exhaust should be bulit in respect to the max horsepower it makes on the bottle. Conversely, in a street application with nitrous, the exhaust system should be built in respect to the maximum horsepower the motor makes off the bottle. That way, you'll optimize the exhaust system for the operating conditinos that the engine sees the most"

A motor that has positive intake pressure(boost) does not need the scavenging effect from the exhaust that an n/a motor needs to make power. And don't confuse scavenging with backpressure, you want exhaust "scavenging" in an n/a motor not backpressure.

Let me quote Scott Stutler(engineer) of DynoMax again,

"Some people say a motor needs a bit of backpressure to preserve low-end torque, while others argue that the less backpressure you have the better. "The fact is, an engine does not need backpressure", Scott says. What it needs is scavenging, which is directly related to exhaust velocity. A common misconception is that you'll lose some low-end torque by stepping up to a larger after-cat system. What's really happening is that the larger-diameter piping is moving the rpm range where the scavenging takes place higher up the powerband. Since exhaust velocity increases with rpm, you're not losing power but moving it higher up in the rpm band instead"

You have a 96SE, you can see my writeup in this forum where I converted my 97SE single exhaust to dual, complete with part numbers and links to all suppliers. (You'll need to locate your own local exhaust shop to weld it all up.) :)
