It's incredibly hard, like doing brain surgery. I don't recommend rebuilding it yourself. You can probably do the swap yourself, but the build itself should be left to a pro.

What are you planning on doing for engine mods? A stock trans is good to mid-13's (S1X cam, headers, 3.4/3.2 pulley, tune) with just a shift kit and regular maintenance, especially with as low of miles as yours has.

A good source for info on it is Triple Edge Transmissions, they're pretty much the go-to source on the 4T65E. http://www.tripleedgeperformance.com/

A pan drop, filter change and shift kit will be all you need, along with a solid front mount.

Not at this level. There are parts that are going to fail before the input shaft, but not till 300+ wheel horsepower.

EDIT: Your mods might put you at 240 WHP at this point. That's somewhere near 300 crank HP, 60 over stock.

Don't. It's not viscous enough for the older transmissions, and can/will cause damage, especially on a car that gets driven hard.

I do agree with an auxillary trans cooler. Somehow slipped my mind...

A Ton of guys on CGP are running it, I also saw a bunch of Duramax guys with Allison Trans run it, shifts smoother and stays cooler. Dex VI is supposed to be backwards compatible with Dex III fluid.

And I've seen a bunch of Duramax guys blow trannies after 20k, even with trucks spec'd to run Dex VI. Allison won't touch them with a 10 foot pole, but GM keeps warranting them, because they're running the proper fluid. They changed the fluid without changing the trans and they're asking why they keep failing.

The best fluid to run in the Allison is Castrol TransSynd, TFS-295 IIRC, or it's Amsoil equivalent, Torq-Shift, which are designed to Allison's strict specifications. That's all I'll run in our 05. Shifts are silky and the trans has never gotten over 210*F, even during heavy towing. Usually around 160*F unloaded, or with a light trailer.

I was just reading more about the allisons... it does look like you want to use the specific fluid for them but all other GM Autos do seem to like the Dex 6. I have not made the switch yet but will next fluid/filter change.

So what is going to fail before the input shaft would those be parts in the shift kit?

Ok next question is there any point in buying a transmission in the link below without all the extra things they offer? Will it be stronger and better suited for extra power or is is pretty much just a stock rebuilt tranny?

Also is this a kind of tranny cooler you would suggest as good?

:bhuh: :poke: Dude, you don't need internal trans upgrades, period. There are a bunch of members (harofreak00, 2000silverbullet, sonoma_zr2, to name a few) on this forum running 1.9 rockers, headers, 3.4 pulleys and tunes that are in the high 13 second range in the 1/4 mile that are running near stock transmissions and have been for many thousands of miles with NO issues. If your car truly has 65,000 miles then you have at least another 80,000 left in it. Also, Thrasher is out of business, and their parts were junk in the first place. Stop worrying about your trans, and do the shift kit and a cooler.

:bluetwitch: :eek2: That trans cooler is nearly $200 too much, and not designed for your car. This is what I have waiting to go on my car soon-ish: http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance- ... 2/10002/-1

Im stealing ideas here, how hard compared to a LIM gasket install is the shift kit install? Those are essentially all the mods i would like to do, so it would help to know.

A shift kit install is basically a glorified pan drop and filter change. It's like 6 extra bolts.

Sorry... A little off topic, but people who run Dex VI are showing lower trans temps which help prolong the life of the trans, which is what he is asking about. Also reading it improves shifts (smoother), which i would consider to be another "upgrade" for the trans.

Agreed, on thoes mods i would not worry about the Clutches, Diff, Input Shaft or Chain as of yet. Just dont neutral drop, do big smokey burnouts or all around Rape your transmission and you should be just fine. My turbo MC w/ a 4T60-e at 330whp held together unitll 140K miles and drove daily, Trans cooler w/ 30K fluid and filter changes and not overly abused if that will help give a piece of mind.

As for a shift kit, you can tweek the shift points, shift pressure and shift times electronically with a tuning program on a laptop... basically doing the same as what a shift kit does but you can tune it to your liking eaiser then dropping the pan, making the adj. and refilling a couple times. not to mention they tuner can also tune the car.
