Well this is my brothers 1998 Camaro. Its got the 3800, 5 speed, 3.23 posi rear end. She's getting pretty tired at 185k and it has what sounds like a lifting starting to rap with anything more than an idle. Still has good oil pressure.

My plan to was get a low mileage L26 and drop in it (as well as a new clutch, among other things). Looking for more power, but don't want to go too crazy and expensive and still want to keep the car daily driveable (at least in the summer months).

Kicked around the idea of a blower and/or turbos but I think that's over my head at this point. Want to keep it streetable and reliable while adding a kick in the pants.

May just leave it stock but figured I'd see if anyone had advice on any power mods that are worth the cost.

So I'm looking at:

S1X Package

Rockers
http://intense-racing.com/Merchant2/mer ... e=3800_HCV

Any other suggestions?

You know my opinion on modding NA.... You will get nowhere. Get an L36 and try and topswap it. It isn't too bad and has been done numerous times. The L26s pop under boost. Weakest of all the 3800s.

Leave it stock. Focus on your next project. ;)

Are you sure it's a bad lifter......or a rod bearing?

What gains would one expect from the cam package vs rockers on NA?

I'd say...GO FOR IT!!! It's something different that will be your own creation, better than being like everyone else and going the easy route or buying a V8 car. If you could swap for a 3400 I'd do it but I don't think that's possible with this generation. There's a guy over on 60degreeV6 that has a 3500 swapped into his 1990 RS I believe. Badarse car.

I'm looking for something that isn't too complicated. It's still going to be a daily driver. This is also a budget build. I'm not trying to throw money at it. Want to make sure every dollar I spend is worth it. It seems $500-$900 would probably not be worth it. But I'm more inclined to do a cam while the motor is out.

Ed, you know me all too well....I have more projects than I have shared lately ;) But more on that later.

I'm not 100% its a lifter but it is clearly coming from under the valve cover and it still holds 60psi of oil pressure. After 2500 miles the oil looks brand new.

My brother wanted to add a blower. But seemed like a lot more headaches in the F-body.

If modding n/a is a waste of money, modding a n/a 3800 with a cam or rockers from Intense is like getting mugged.

ZZP ER rockers are the only rockers that should go in a n/a L36/26.

Stock gears: ZZP GT1 cam

Upgraded gears: Abbott Racing or ZZP GT2/3 cam

You won't need a tune with just rockers but you'll likely never see much above 190whp.
Cam and a tune you'll see 200-240whp depending on bolt ons.

Only reason I was looking at those is because it's "easy.". I guess you can't have easy and cheap. I guess my other concern is we don't want to make too much power where the rear end or Trans will be compromised either.

Not gonna damage the trans with any N/A build. Rear end probably won't either...

I wouldn't worry about it, they'll last with the mods you have in mind provided your driving habits don't change
Like mentioned above, the suggested mods will net you close to or at 200 hp. After that, money will play into it but if your looking for a bit more kick at of your DD, that'll do.

You'll only blow the trans/diff if you try doing a High RPM clutch dump on a well prepped track with slicks and just put a huge shockload on the drivetrain, IMHO.

I'd say GT1 cam, LS6 springs, Comp Retainers and keepers... I'd say that would get you what your looking for.. as well as an HD clutch... I wouldn't want a clutch from the parts store either..

If you just wanted a little more from the motor this is what I would do..

As well as I am curious, Have you looked at the tune? I am sure there is still torque management there Manual trans or not.. Some mild tuning may wake the car up..

I would also port and polish no matter which route you go. It's a shame when you need to fix what the factory broke.

From what I've seen the F-body LIM intake runner ports are in much better shape than the FWD version.

+1 on Don's idea. If it's in the budget, even though it won't be a street warrior or the fastest car out there, it will still be a ton of fun to drive.
