Hey guys,

Just recently, my buddies fiance's 1998 Grand Prix GT dropped 1st and 2nd gear. He is currently looking for another car and going to sell this one. Within the year, he has put new brakes on it and some front suspension work. The tires are also in decent shape with about 30,000 miles on them (60,000 mile warranty on tires). Based on these facts, I may be interesting in picking this car up for cheap and throwing in a used tranny and driving it through the winter. Before jumping on it, I wanted to gather some more info.

The transmission is the GP is the ever so famous 4t65-E. I was talking with Ryan Toth and he has one that came out of the wrecked 00 SE he has. My question is this: Will a 2000 4t65-E from a Bonneville bolt right up with everything from a 1998 Grand Prix GT? Ryan and I discussed there may be some wiring that needs to be changed over but this was just a guess. Was wondering if someone could give me a direct yes or no answer from their experience.

Thanks for the help!

Didn't Bonneville's get 3.05 gearing while GP GT's got 3.29? That might cause an issue. I think I remember reading something like that on Grand Prix forums.

SE bonnevilles got 2.86 gears I think, not a big deal to change the gears through.

When I was looking for a different transmission for my bonneville I was told by a junk yard that a grand prix transmission wouldn't work because they mount in different places.

But my gut still tells me it would work, why would gm make a different case for the same transmission? Just make different mounts.

Carl - you are correct that gearing was different....but I thought doing a complete swap wouldn't matter but I'm not sure...that's why I'm here...

It does seem odd that there would be two different cases for same trans...I guess I will need to try getting either schematics for each or get side by side comparison to see...

I can also tell you that napa has two different part numbers for the complete transmission. This could be because of the different gear ratios.

That is the transmission if it makes a difference.
