Year and Trim: 88 SE and 04 SLE

What engine control systems are bypassed during starting but are immediately reconnected when engine fires. Trying to trouble shoot and intermittent problem that occurs occasionally. After engine is started and the key is released - the engine dies and will not restart. Then some time later it starts and runs perfectly. No codes stored. Cranking normal.
