The fuel gauge in my wife's 2001 Grand Prix GT recently began wandering about. It reads full if the tank is full, and it works until you get close to a half-tank. Then it wanders around between half and full as you drive. My dealership simply shakes their head and says "It will be expensive if we troubleshoot it." (I believe them.)

Anyone ever seen this and know of possible causes?
TIA.

Sending unit. Without a doubt.

And that's located in the tank, correct? And kind of a pain to get to, yes?

yes and yes. The Bonneville has an access hatch for the Fuel Pump, i don't think the GP does.

I don't know if it applies to the Grand Prix's also, but perhaps Hans' write-up on the fix may help you.

yes the gp has a access in the trunk right behind the rear seat, under the carpet. just did one on my daughters car. (287.00) oreilly parts, the only thing that made me mad was you have to cut your factory plug off and splice their new plug on (o'reilly) other brands may be different. her car was a 2001 gp, also have done one on a98

If it's accessible behind the rear seat under the carpet, then I'm okay with doing that myself. I'll check out the part at O'Reily's. I'm okay with swapping a connector plug over, but I agree, they should really just make a compatible plug. *Duuuuh.* Thanks, everyone for the tips!
