My sister's 99 Lesabre check engine light flashed on while she was on the freeway yesterday and this morning I found the coolant level was a gallon low, after adding coolant, the check engine light was still on. I checked to make sure gas cap was tight, oil level and trans fluids were all up to level. Does the light come on when the coolant level is low and does it take starting the car a couple of times for it to go off after coolant is added? Is there a reset switch under the dash? When she started the car the light was off.
Thanks
Mike

First step should be to get the code pulled. Maybe it's something small. There is no reset switch, but an autozone or whatever you have around will usually scan and clear codes for free.

Did your oil look milky? Watch the coolant like a hawk, and if you loose any more, drain the oil and change your UIM / LIM. here is the info on them:

The oil was changed a couple of weeks ago and I don't see any color change whatsoever, there is a very small leak from the water pump seal and does need coolant added once a month. So far, the check engine light hasn't come back on since the coolant was topped off. Guess it's about time for a new water pump. 140,000+ miles isn't so bad for the original to last this long. Thank you very much.
Mike

Yeah thats about how long mine lasted too. If its coming from the water pump and not the intake manifold gaskets, that's probably a good thing. It's not too bad of a job
