So i broke the trans in the bonneville last week. Got on it, it downshifted, pulled for a second and then let go. Im pretty sure its the chain. Its the only thing left stock in my trans that could cause a total loss of movement.

Thing is, ive been beating the crap out of that trans since i built my motor. A couple trips to chicago, couple trips to Detroit, general hooning around minnesota, etc. After all thet, i brok it in front of my house. Coasted into the driveway. Not a bad result in my opinion.

Better to brake in front of your house than 900 miles away...

I have had similar luck in the PA thankfully. It's only been on a tow truck twice, once when the shift interlock solenoid jammed (at a gas station, didn't feel like crawling under the dash there) and the other time was to get the car from work to the mechanic for a heater core failure (I didn't have a ride at the moment for work, and I have tow coverage, so, why not?).

Every other failure has happened either in the driveway, or at least made it back to the driveway.

I'm glad luck was on your side on this round.

Wow, that is some good luck as to where it broke on ya! My dad had the trans die on our old Caravan about 1300 miles away from home, needless to say that RGC got sold pretty soon after that. Hope you get everything squared away and back on the road soon!

I have the 7/8 with a 3.29 in a box, ready to go. Just need to finish the garage project and detail a few cars and then i should be able to tear into it.

The first time I broke an axle for the F40 was within coasting distance on the house. The second time was only 8 miles away, and it was just as bad as when I broke the 4t65 at the MI meet which was so much farther... You got lucky with the timing there!

I've never broken a chain, so I'm still 50/50 on this one, what input shaft did you have? I broke my stock input on a 1-2 upshift during a burnout with 5 people in the car with a car that ran a 14.6 on the 1/4 mile. I've heard about one 11.5s Fiero that broke a 4340 shaft.

I can't wait to see the carnage pics!

I have a 4340 ZZP input shaft. Its always a possibility, but i hope and suspect its the chain. Ill tear into it later this winter. If its just the chain, ill put the new one in and go on with my life. If its more major carnage ill look into a 4t80 or f40 swap. While its apart i plan to step up my cam game to an intense stage 3 and maybe do some more head work. I really would like to see 400whp on the m90.
