I would say that for sporty dry / wet weather conditions AWD would be the best, but for all out traction in nasty snow storms, 4WD just can't be beat. 50/50 power split front to back no matter what, throw in at least a rear locker and at any given time you have at least three wheels that will have power no matter what the conditions.

I work with a guy that has a newer WRX with snows on steelies, and while I do prefer a true 4WD system, I do think that car would be a blast to drive in the snow.

The 8.1 is fun in the snow, but also terrifying cause I can go crazy fast through turns.

Seem like in reverse the 4WD gets reduced to 1WD - the wheel with the least traction. I have the locking rear diff. Towed a 6000# sailboat across my yard in 8 inches of soggy snow on Sunday to move it in the barn. Had a heck of a time backing up but as long as I didn't spin it was fine. Driving forward wasn't much different than not towing.

I wonder what it would take to get a locking transfer case?...
