We have just checked into the Holiday Inn in Omaha. Will probably be in Ohio tomorrow night. I am averaging 15 mpg in the truck which was what I figured.

So far all is well except for the truck oozing. It was about 6 months ago that I changed the rear diff fluid. While in Utah, I looked underneath and can see the gear oil leaking out the axle seal on the left side. While in Ohio I plan on checking the level and topping it off and checking at each stop. It is not leaking bad, so I will wait and replace it when I get home.

Does any one know if this has the same old set-up they have used in the past? Clip to pull the axle and get to the seal.

If I remember, I can look it up tonight. Most GM rear ends of recent use the clips (for ease of R&R under warranty), but in an HD truck, I don't recall.

Ohio has been good so far. Sunday I will be working on the daughter's car (the 95 SE that we gave her). The bypass elbow is leaking and the oil pan gasket is bad. She now has 228,000 miles on it and it purrs like a kitten.

We bought that car with a little over 120,000 on it in 2006. The clear coat is pretty well gone, but she loves it and does not want to get rid of it. The only mechanical issue that needs addressed is the rear struts are toast.

After the first of the year she wants to get a new car and I convinced her (with Don's idea) to keep this one as a winter car since they use salt here.

We are departing here on Wednesday morning and heading to Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Be careful. If you're going down I-77, watch those drivers in W.V. and VA. Last time we went that way, I thought the drivers were worse than in Houston. I think they speed up when it rains. - BC

Glad to hear Matt.

If you remember from swapping the wheels, were there bolts on the axle end? If there were, it's a full floating rear. If not, then it should have C-clips.

Work completed on the car today. The oil pressure is falling off a little and there is a little play in the rod bearings, but she is still running good. This is also on the original transmission and the old grey modulator about the size of a 1lb coffee can.

Unless its the 10.5 14 bolt rear. you can determine this by looking at the front of the diff, the Pinion is in its own retainer, held in by 6 bolts. If its a 10.5, its a full floating axle, meaning, axle bolts to the wheel hub via 8 bolts, if you have a hub seal leaking, its not as nice to change yourself. Two sets of tapered bearings inside there to deal with.
If shes a c-clip style/semi floater, easy peasy.

According to Matt's information, I have a full floater. On the pinion, there is 6 bolts around it. For right now, I am just making sure the fluid is up and will tackle this when we get home.

No biggie for a gearhead!

Well, today we depart for North Carolina. I am up and sipping a cup of coffee waiting for the others to come to life. It has been a good stay in Ohio with the usual issues with family spats. They don't bother me because I know I am heading out.

Our daughter Megan benefited from us being here. She got 2 new tires, a new oil pan gasket, an oil change, new metal coolant elbow, a coffee pot and a new kitchen table and chairs.

I am very proud of her. She has completed nursing school and is working 2 jobs while going back to school to get her baccalaureates. She is saving money to replace the old 95 and to buy a house.

I talked with her a lot and she is very motivated to get her nurse practitioner license and she knows it will take a lot.If anyone can do it, she can.

Now, for some fun stuff. We visited more family last night and decided to come back a little early to get sleep for today's travel. When we get in the door, she is watching Family Guy and drinking a beer with a bottle of Pineapple Parrot Bay in front of her. So........ I did a couple shots with her and had a couple beers.

I got to bed at 1 am and woke up at 6.

The funnest thing was watching my parents reactions to The Family Guy. They are 70+ years old and were busting a gut at almost everything. My mom said she actually liked it.

Now, our daughter in NC wants us to go out with her to see a band. She works at Hooters (has completed school for nursing also) and is single and loves to party. I do not know if I can hang with a bunch of teenie boppers.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 20 and I can't even hang with people. I'm passed out and sleeping like a baby by 10:30 pm hahaha.

I looked it up in SI and I'm pretty sure I picked the 10.5" (being the bigger of the two), figuring it was an HD truck, and it is "C" clips in the diagram. They specifically listed both.

We are now in Winston-salem and have been to Hooters (beer and wings have been consumed). Checked into the motel and relaxing for a little while.

Today we took a trip to Lizard Lick towing. It was a fun trip and got a tee shirt and a couple other items. The crew was not there, but it was fun to see and get pictures.

Now in Florida.

We got here Saturday night to find my parent's AC in their house died. Spent most of Saturday looking at that. Found the connector on the starting capacitor vibrated and broke. The condenser fan single phased and now the motor is crap. Being a weekend, none can be located and he is searching today.

Went to my brother's yesterday for his step-son's 10th birthday and Wendy got trashed (been a long time). Had a good cookout with a lot of home made food.

Today we are debating on driving to Tampa or going to Orlando to see the Disney crew.

Haven't posted here in awhile. We just got back into Oregon and 350 miles to home.

We left Florida on the intentions of meeting Don and Brad. Decided to go to St Augustine and see the ocean. I have already been to the east coast, but for Wendy she can finally say she has been from coast to coast.

From there, we spent the night in North Carolina again and then to Ohio (one last visit with our kids) before the run on home.

We did stop in Utah for the night and to see more family.
