It took me a while to post this on here, as I've been going crazy as to what's happening recently.

My mechanic told me that my engine cradle has no frame left to bolt onto anymore, as it's rusted out that badly. This is unrepairable and he said I shouldn't even drive it because it's unsafe. So basically what it boils down to is that I have to get rid of the car. Stupid me didn't check underneath the car before I bought it.

I'm having to part with a friend. I only just joined here in June and I've bought several decals, SSE tails, just bought new wiper blades, etc. Total, I've spent at least 500 bucks on this car (that I already paid 2400 for) since I bought it in June. Now it's all going down the toilet!

SO, I was wondering what my best move would be with this car. What should I do with the car that will get me the most money out of it? Junk it, part it out, sell it as a parts car, ..., ?

The L67 engine was rebuilt about 7000 miles ago. There's 112,000 miles on the body. Most of the panels on the exterior are in decent shape, and the interior is beautiful. Thoughts?

Umm, wow, that really sucks. I would see what you can get for it private party, or part it out, a good S1 L67 is worth $500, minimum, especially with only 7k on it.

I'll sell you a subframe you get you back in order. Yes, it would be a lot of work to replace, but its cheaper than selling a car for a loss.

Andrew...I'm almost positive he's referring to the sheet metal that the frame bolts to is what's rusting, and not the actual frame itself....those frames are built..and really well coated..but the body they bolt to is horrible.

PeterG went through serious amounts of effort and money fixing all the rust on his '92 SSEi to fix what's happening to this car in this situation...if you have the money and know a shop around you that does good metal work, its an option...but chances are...there are many other places on the car that are rusting through that you can't even see....

It isn't worth it unless you verify those other places are fixable...part it or sell it as a whole...

I'm not exactly sure what it is. From what I understand from my mechanic, the bushing has practically no metal left to bolt onto. My understanding was that that metal was the frame. I'm not familiar with whatever else you said tho.

See, it's not worth it to me to do all that work. I don't even like the car that much...cuz it's only an SE. I just happened to buy it cuz it's what worked out at the time. And no, I don't have the money, unfortunately. I've already spent too much money on this car that I shouldn't have. IMO, this car is too far gone (rusted) for it to be worth putting money into fixing the rust (especially in my budget). If I just buy a new car with minimal rust, I know it will take my dollar much further. Otherwise I know the Bonneville will just nickle and dime me to death.

My mechanic and I talked to a few welders around town that he recommended, and they all said they won't do it because it's too much of a liability. Which probably means it's not worth having the work done in the first place.

Gotta love Ohio for the rust. It's just cold enough and downwind from Lake Erie that it starts snowing (which therefore means salt) by mid November, and in the spring just when you think you're in the clear and the roads have been finally rinsed off, we get a nice blast in mid-early April so the roads get all salted up again. That makes almost a 6 month salt season. And, it's just warm enough that the roads rarely freeze-dry - in fact, the roads around my house have been wet every single day for the last 3 weeks. So every day, my Olds and my minivan get a fresh coating of salt. I'm starting to think that my meticulous mechanical maintenance of my cars is a waste of time and money, because I end up selling a rusted out car that is mechanically great. It's also why many people around here lease a car for 3 years, then start all over again, do nothing but minimal oil changes.
Where in Ohio are you?
Mike

That would be correct! New Middletown, to be exact. About 15 min. south of Ytown. Tell me about it. What a waste of time keeping up your engine. My engine, as said b4, was just rebuilt 7000 miles ago. Doesn't mean jack if it's "cradling" in rust. Ohio SUCKS!

Can you find out whether its the subframe or the actual frame that is rusting.

If its just the subframe, you can support the engine/trans from the top, and remove and replace the subframe.

If it is the subframe, don't be so quick to scrap it out. I might be interested in the whole car.
