The White Curse seems to really have it out for me, in the form of Low Oil Pressure

Oil pressure has been absolutely perfect since we got the '01 Ei, more or less 60psi except for warm idle @ 40psi.

The last few days it was coming down, never dipped below 40psi until today. So back to the 11mpg F-150 till at least Thursday.

It dipped down to 25-30psi a few times, once it got down below 40psi it fluctuated from 30-40 a few times. I got to a place in the road where I could shut it off, and I let it sit for about a minute and then started up and it stayed around 40-45psi and then just before I got to the parking lot it dipped down again. So I'm assuming the sump is getting clogged. I have no clue what got in there though.

I don't know what the previous owner used for oil, but I've always used Havoline. I was going to switch to M1 after I did the LIM, since Mobil is a bit expensive and I when I did the LIM I was going to be changing the oil a couple times.

I didn't think about this before, but my question is what if the car already was switched to synthetic and I put conventional in it? I know you're not suposed to go back once it's switched but I don't know why or what happens.

Don't worry about changing back and forth. They're compatible nowadays. Most of the "synthetics" on the market now are really highly refined dino oil.

Uh, try another oil change and use a different filter?

Essentially you're not supposed to switch because of the different elements in different types of oils...in different makes of oil, the different detergents can react with each other...possible to cause increased oxidation, corrosion, or breakdown of rubber and plastic seals.

any possibility that it could be the oil pressure sender?

Pressure sounds normal to me. I run at 40-50 while driving, and it usually dips to around 30 when I'm idling in traffic. Been like that for years.

Well I'm just finding it weird that it was perfect and suddenly it's dropping.

I'm gonna drop the pan Thursday to be absolutely sure there is no gunk in there, and change the oil obviously, which has about 1000 miles on it.

I'm not doing this for another year with another car.

Have fun dropping the pan. You need to support the engine from the top, and then remove the bolts that hold the engine mount to the pan, and then you can take the pan off.

My 00 runs about like haro stated. It will run a little higher for the first few miles after an oil change and then back to the norm. I don't see anything wrong with it either. Now, if I accelerated and it didn't come up much, I would be worried.

Booze if you are running Dino you may consider going to Synthetic... Dino will not hold up as well as Synthetic and after you put some miles on the oil the pressure will decrease slightly...

Its also possible to have a fuzzy oil pressure sender.. But go to the synthetic with a good oil filter... You can pull the pan, but again I don't think you even find enough to have slowed the oil flow to the engine..

The oil pressuer senders in these cars simply gives you an idea of where the oil pressure is, not true oil pressure, but an idea of where it falls..

My Bonneville starts at about 75 Psi, once you start driving its 80 Psi... As it warms up 60 Psi is the norm... And stopped at a light is 35-40 usually..

The 91 LE is 60-65 psi cold start... 35-45 Hot idle..

The Van... well Its got a pissed lifter still... I installed a new sender( AC Delco )... Got 80 Psi at cold start for a while... The it stuck a 40 for the longest.... After a while it would show 60-65 Psi while driving.... Then it stuck at 40 again and continues to do so... Moves very little now and when you turn the ignition on you have 20 Psi without the engine running( I think I'm having horrible luck with these senders )
.
If it will give you piece of mind go ahead and pull the pan and clean it, replace the gasket then use the synthetic..

I just find it odd that it suddenly changed, because it has been running exactly how I said in the first post, 60psi and 40psi @ warm idle since day one (two months ago today).

It is my observation as well as from seasoned mechanics who work on these cars that the oil pressure readings on these cars are flaky at best. If you want to know the true oil pressure, the only way to do it is to hook up a mechanical gauge and get a reading that way.

On my 96 SSEi it would read 45-48 PSI at cold start, then after a hot day and a half hour of driving it will go down as low as 18 at a stop light. If I were to turn on my lights my PSI would go up by ~7. Its been doing this for over 2 years and 17000 miles since I got it. I get similar behavior on my 93. And yet the engines keep humming along...

Well an oil change, new filter (WIX) and new sending unit coming Thursday.

While I was in class today dad came home and stole the car because he needed something to drive, He said it doesn't move at all with RPM anymore, it just seems to do it's own thing except at idle where it sits at 40psi

Thats exactly what the van is doing now... It might hit 45 Psi... But the rest of the time its dead set at 40

Its going to get another sender too... At least with the original it moved a bit :eek2:

I'm not sure where the oil switch horror stories in this topic come from, but I classify them as old-wives-tales that get passed around. I doubt any member of this Forum has ever had a negative experience switching either way.

The detergents used in most oils today are not reactive, are all compatible, and cause no problems switching back and forth by TYPE of oil any more than they would by BRAND of oil of the same type.

Use this guide:
http://www.aa1car.com/library/API_ratings.pdf

And buy any oil that your cap and that guide dictate, regardless of dino juice or synthetic. Switch back and forth if you like, any time you want.

Well just squeezed in an oil change, and she's back to 60psi. Didn't see anything funny in the oil either, so I'm probably not dropping the pan. The sending unit is already on it's way, so I might switch it anyway or save it until it's deemed necessary again.

Thanks for the info and input guys.

How long are you letting it run before you call out these numbers?

This morning it was 39*F here, and my oil pressure on startup was 60, 70 with throttle. But after all my trips around town, when it had gotten warmer out, I saw 27-29 while idling at a stoplight.

Ran for about 20 minutes. Started at 60psi and then came down to 40psi after about 10-15 minutes and I went for a drive around the block. And it was about 70-73*F outside when I did this.

We'll see how it does tomorrow for sure.
