So, after getting my car back from the shop, I was told that the frame under the driver's side was shot and is on its way out. (I already had a feeling this was true.) The mechanic advised me to get rid of it now while the car has some value.

I am not done with this car, and I do not want to get rid of it yet. 106k miles is small. Also, this issue is preventing me from sinking any more money into the car (tires, LIM replacement, among other things).

So, what do you guys think I should do? I see three options:

1. Drive the car until the frame actually goes.
2. Sell the car as-is and buy a different car.
3. Have a body shop weld on a piece of metal over the damaged area.

What exactly is shot? Is it the subframe itself, or where the subframe bolts to?

Give us some pictures so we know what we're working with. I've probably done more with rust repair than anybody here, and can tell you exactly what you're looking at. Most likely you just need to replace the subframe bushings/washers as the '00+ cars are not as susceptible to rot issues.

Let's see some photos. My car has some rust but it was super clean for the most part around the subframe mountings. Replacing the bushings isn't a bad job, you'd be surprised how easy it is.

This is what you see before you go under the car.....

And what you see underneath the car.

I'm going to offer 2 more pictures of the area: one in 2016, and one....well, just now.

My apologies for taking this long to post. It has been a busy day.

OK, yep, you've got rust! Is it just on the drivers side? Good news is that it's not into the subframe bushing area or anything. However, it's only going to get worse.

I would strip all the loose stuff out, with an ice pick and an angle grinder with a sanding disk on it. Anything that doesn't stay attached wasn't doing anything anyway. Oil spray what's left inside and out (fluid film or similar) and just keep on driving it.

It can be fixed, probably best left to a body shop if you aren't capable. If you don't think the car is worth it, just don't sell it to somebody buying a car for their kid.

As of right now, it is only on the driver's side. The passenger side has a small crack in it, but nothing more. The rest of the undercarriage is in very good shape considering the car's age. Once the weather starts warming up, I'll get to cleaning up the area.

I probably won't sell the car - I still like it too much. Plus I'd have to explain everything wrong with it, etc.....
