I was thinking of buying one for a little under 6 thousand with 153k miles on it. Is that a good deal for a base G8? I have been wanting one for awhile but didn't know much about them. It is also an 08, are there any major things I need to be concerned with? Thanks

I wouldn't recommend a V6 G8 to my worst enemy.

You might as well save up a bit more and get a GT. Same fuel economy, much better engine, way more power, modability, better looking, etc. They're getting pretty cheap now.

They all can suffer from the same suspension issues as a result of the shipping method here from down under. I think they have some kind of cam issue as well, but other than that a very solid, roomy, well built car that is fun to drive. The V6 is like a RWD Impala fleet car to me. Lol

Thanks, I really haven't researched a lot on this car and wanted to know of any major issues before considering the purchase.

For the v6, inquire about timing jobs. For the v8, listen for lifter tap. And clunks in the front suspension from any (lower control arms).

The only difference in "looks" between a V6 G8 and a V8 G8 (GT, not GXP), is wheels and taillights. Otherwise if you put the two next to one another you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Many GT owners actually prefer the V6 tails. And many others (Myself here in spring), go for the Spyder LED HSV replica taillights anyway.

But yes, don't waste your time with a V6. Get a V8. The issues with the V8 are solely related to the DoD and oil consumption from it. But that's any modern GM V8 with it. Many will replace the valvetrain (cam), and tune out the DoD.

As to suspension it's struts that get "clunky". Mine are doing it right now (and are REALLY obnoxious when it's cold). Pace Performance has a full strut/shock package from the Caprice that is a direct bolt-in.

Outside of that, you will run the risk of body and Holden specific driveline part availability should something happen. Everything from the driveshaft back isn't a regular part in the GMNA parts network. Camaro and CTS-V parts may look similar, but they aren't the same.

Issues on the inside, sagging headliner is a common issue, the steering wheel wings that like to pop up on the top of the spokes, and terrible radio reception. The speakers suck (even if you turn up the gain on the amp in the trunk).

Mine came from Florida and it was out in the sun a lot, so all the windshield moulding is dry rotted. But those are cheap and easy to replace. Another thing I will do come spring.
