Call me crazy, and That's been done countless times, I
A month ago I bought another GXP, It has over half the miles of my first GXP, it's a Grand Prix GXP. anyone have
experience with the 2004 - 2008 Grand Prix GXP. ?? I know they share the same drive train as the Impala SS and Monte Carlo SS,
Good, bad, what to watch out for?

I have read a lot on the internet that suggests they love to destroy the transmission by 75k miles.

Beyond that, I really don't know much of anything.

I heard that as well, actually mine just had the transmission rebuilt, I am going to install an additional transmission oil cooler, before summer, I heard it is best to.keep transmission fluid below 180° F. If anyone has advice on the best transmission oil cooler or what they are happy with I interested in their comments.

They tend to chew up transmissions... But yours is rebuilt! Get a shift kit in there and a transmission cooler and if you respect it and aren't overly abusive, she should last you just fine.

While they do tend to be hard on transmissions, GM does dial up a ton of Torque Management as well as TCC slip speed upon initial engagement to help "cushion" the impact.

One of the things I hate about driving our Impala SS. When you first put it in gear and start to accelerate, as well as accelerating from a stop, it's like mixing a clutch at the friction point for awhile as you mesh everything up. It can almost give the illusion of a ton of slack. Ours is close to 150k on the original trans, but my Mother drives it, so...

I think the other issue, similar to the N*, is doing simple work on it.

Some of the plugs are a bitch to do, anything on the serpentine drive is a PITA to do, it won't hurt to invest in the special serpentine belt tool for them. I fought buying one for the longest time, jerry rigging my own setup, which worked only half the time with more time involved. I finally broke down and got it, and it was literally half the time I spent dinking around trying to do it my own way. Recently, ours had one of the power steering feed lines (to the rack), break loose and start rubbing against something in that area, so when she came out one morning, she had a big puddle of power steering fluid on the ground. So that had to be fixed. Other than that, just a warranty item on rear lower control arms, if I recall.

Oh, one more thing I had to fix. The whole wiper transmission over one little plastic cap that broke. GM doesn't make those replacement caps available. So I had to buy the whole *dang* thing.

Here are the plugs I mention;

Here are some of the Serpentine belt fun and tool. I move the electrical system over (not completely disconnect, although that is what GM says);

Then the fun...

That tool looks so *dang* simple in pics, but it works SOOO freaking well. It's angled in at the right point to avoid the front rail, and the square point is angled appropriately to be at the right point in terms of tool angle.

Hey, thanks guys, I was wondering what would be best when installing transmission oil cooler... by pass the radiator cooler, or use it. I will place the biggest oil cooler I can place in it, and a fan on it. Oh, the dipstick for the transmission is different from what I have seen before, it's a cable like material, and a ball mid way on the stick, is that correct?? Is a Shift kit something I can install? Lane, how pricey was that tool, I still have my Bonneville, it needs a waterpump, I will wait for Warmer weather to replace it. Oh, Lane she did say YES, well actually Si, if I did not tell you. Lol

Dipstick: Yes, it's a goofy ball style.

Cooler: Unless you're planning on doing a lot of quarter mile running with it, I don't know that it's really "necessary". Running it cooler isn't going to save it. Not hitting it hard will.

Tool: http://www.freedomracing.com/en-47988-s ... gJGUvD_BwE

This is where I bought it from. I don't think I paid this amount though. I seem to recall it being around $130 at the time. There is a cheaper way to do it with a 4" or 5" hose clamp. But it involves removing the splash shield behind the passenger front wheel, wrapping it around the spring on the tensioner, and tightening until the spring compresses. However, my issues with this are 1) time. By the time you've done all this, you'd already have the new belt on with the tool. 2) There isn't a lot of room to snake the belt around the crank pulley so if you put the screw side of the clamp on the side by the crank pulley, you cut down your room to work it around. It'll eventually get the job done though.

Waterpump: Oh boy...

Proposal: CONGRATS...

Oh ok Good to know, sounds like the tool is the way to go. I seen the 4" or 5" hose clamp method on the Tube, I don't plan any strip activity for that GXP. I figured if I could keep the transmission oil around 170°F might help it. It gets around 190, at times when it's 50° F. So I figured summer would be warmer.
Oh, the waterpump on the Northstar is a rough job? I know i need the special tool to remove it and install.

Sorry, I misread, the water pump on a N* is not difficult. For some reason I thought you were referring to the LS4.
