hi all, took a 200klm trip today - was -7c, my ect was at almost 80c by guage and when I hit the highway, it dropped to 65c - halfway from start to 90c.

I dont want to pull and test it right now, but should it not reach 185f to open and stay closed until 185f

You'll want to verify the temperature readings using a means other than the stock temperature gauge. If they hold pattern to OBD 1 stuff I have seen in that era, the gauge does not behave logically. From what I have seen, the first 1/8th of the gauge accounts for 100-160* F, and then the remaining 7/8 is gauged consistently to scale. That ends up putting 180*F around the 1/4 mark if I recall correctly.

The stock thermostat is 195*F however. When slammed with cold air, like on a frigid road trip, I have seen them ride 185-190. It also can take a moment for it to close up, allowing the temperature to drop even further before it comes back up.

Are you running a stock thermostat, or a 180* unit?
