I guess I should say this... Shame on me... My 03 Got its last oil change in September 14... The oil is still not black, And I have added once.. It will get changed soon.. Last fill was Synthetic and will be again soon.. 120,000 ish miles and still a clean motor, burns more oil than I really like it to... But with the oil changes it seems to be getting cleaned out.. Also seems like the oil burning has lessened over time..

The 95 with the 96 motor still burns the same amount as it always has.. I just checked the oil and its not bad but due none the less.. It was changed in January iirc.. I filled it with Vavoline High Mileage as the motor is 20 years old, next fill will also be Valvoline HM.. still gets 24 Mpg in town..lol

Lately I have let my cars go far too long, but I don't think its enough to harm the engines.. I let my 95 go 2 years that one time, that may not have been good... That oil was the blackest nastiest oil I had ever seen from a 3800..

My car will burn a quart every 3k on 5W30. So I run Rotella and I never have to add any, unless I go all the way till like 7-8k miles. Might be something to consider, Don!

As for oil turning black, I thought that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, just the oil doing its job?

The oil getting darker does mean its doing it job and suspending contaminants which is what we want.. On my 95 I let it go so long there was no way the oil could have been doing its job.. It seemed to come out thicker than it went in, and I could see some sludge at the bottom of the heads... Its had a couple of oil changes since and looks a lot better, the sludge seems to have been cleaned out.. This engine is a 96 motor making it 20 years old and I have treated it like an enemy...LMAO..

Its odd the my 91 didn't use much oil at all.. The Van with the original motor used next to nothing( I never added oil to it ).. My 95 Burned it to the tune 0f 1/2 to 3/4 quart in 3k miles.. The 96 is much the same..

The 03 will burn a quart in 3k, but lately it seems to be a bit less.. I may have to try some Rotella... What weight are you running? and is it the synthetic?

The 06 Motor in the van uses next to nothing..

I'll just leave my 2 cents here. I've seen the gammet. And it seemed like the synthetic will clean out a dirty engine that hasn't seen enough oil changes. Case in point....my 1997 bonnie. 270k on the original engine. And the synthetic was turning brown/black around 3k but it would leak about a quart in that time. Add another quart and change it around 4500.

I've cleaned out plenty of engines full of crud because of bad maintenance simply by adding a pint of diesel fuel and letting the engine idle for twenty minutes or so. To my knowledge several of these engine went on to give many miles of reliable service. But getting regular oil changes from then on. :)

in reference to the cost of oil, I wait till the Castrol dexos 1 synthetic 5 quart jug goes on sale for $16.05, than buy 3 with Pureone oil filters. - BC
