Soo its been raining the past couple days here in MI and the carpet behind my drivers seat is really damp. What can be causing this? I looked under the car and it isn't rotted through..

Do you have a sunroof? Check your sunroof drains...

Waterms in the back carpet usually comes from the front sunroof drains separating under the dash. If you don't have a sunroof then the water shield inside the door trim should be resealed

Yeah I have a sunroof. I was thinking the drains but wasn't sure. What involves fixing the front drains? Do I need to remove the headliner because I reallllly dont want to do that...

So pretty much for the rear drains they would be clogged at the drain site to be making puddles and not under the head liner? Because the the headliner would be wet and it isn't. If all I have to do is take out the interior and fix a clogged rubber line, that is fine because I've been wanting to powerwash the interior carpets and really clean the inside good!

Here is what your sunroof assembly will look like outside of the car;

Image

Notice at the front, there are two nipples, one at each corner. There are corresponding ones on the back. Attached to each of these nipples are plastic tubes. The plastic tubes then run down each corresponding pillar (the two A-pillars in the front and the two C-pillars in the back), and then drain out under the vehicle around the wheel well areas.

Notice the drip tray surrounding the perimeter of the assembly. This is where the water goes, then feeds into the drains, which then feed the tubes.

So if those tubes get clogged, the water backs up, leaks over, and then drains itself, down the pillars and into the floorboard area of your car. Your headliner won't neccessarily be wet for two reasons. The one I mentioned above in that it will drain itself down the pillars, but secondly, your headliner is only soft and fuzzy on the side you see. On the backside (the side facing the roof), it is a harder, plastic/resin/glue covered material that isn't necessarily water absorbant.

To clear the drains, you need to remove the plastic trim around each pillar, pull down the headliner in that area (if you can. Worst case scenario is you have to take the entire thing down as if you were to replace the sunroof), disconnect the drain tube from the nipple, and then run compressed air through the tube and nipple. If it's really bad, sometimes a long pipe cleaner...
