Went to shop for oil filters recently, and noticed that there is more than one of the old tried & true AC Delco PF47 oil filters out there.

After a bit of research, I found that PF47 remains the same but is now considered the "classic" version. PF47E and PF47F are a newer "E-Core" design that came out in late 2009. Both "E" and "F" are the same filter. Whether they are called "E" or "F" depends only upon whether they were shipped in bulk ("F") or in individual boxes ("E").

Here is a link with info and an exploded view of the newer design: http://www.sandyblogs.com/techconnect/2009/11/acdelco-launches-redesigned-oe-oil-filter.html

The "E" and "F" versions are also labelled "Professional Grade" and cost 50% more than the regular PF47. They are also a little smaller, which should allow for more hand clearance.

There has not been much discussion about this here at the club. Does anybody who knew about this have a preferance? For our cars is it worth the extra money for the PF47E? How do you think this newer filter compares to a Wix or PureOne filter?

The e-core filters are revisions by GM to be able to use said filters in more applications across the board. You'll note that the case may be slightly smaller. I'm not sure about the 47's, but the e-core 52's are a little smaller (shorter). You'll also find that these e-core filters are made by Champion labs.

Filters GM revised for this e-core are the 46's (LSx cars), 47's (the L36 & L67's), 52's (GM trucks), and 61's (LD8).

Read about it here (scroll down about mid-way);
http://www.acdelcotechconnect.com/pdf/09TSS-062.pdf

And of course, to answer the age old question, will the new e-cores work better than the classic? You'll never know the difference! Eventually the older classic 47's will be phased out, and store's inventories will be depleted, and only the new e-core's will be out there. It's not a worthy difference to lose sleep over. I think I have an E-core on my LS1, and know I've had several E-cores on my 3.8. No one here will ever push either filter past it's design tolerances.

47s were also used on L27s, just FTR.

I suspect the design change by Champion Labs was influenced more by a desire to reduce the cost of materials and assembly, than any performance or filtration improvement. Just feeling how thin the can is versus the old filters tells me what I need to know. That said, I still think it's a good filter. I think the Nylon core is a great idea, and I'm fairly certain the fiber / textile endcaps has the potential to seal just as good or better than metal on metal. I've used them a number of times and have never had an issue. The jury is still out as to why their entire line has not been switched to E-core-- Either there's a size or design constraint, or not enough sales volume in those sizes to justify the switch. My Nissan truck has a PH7317 type filter, and it has never been available as an E-core.

AC Delco used to make their own filters, but started outsourcing these a number of years ago. I'm sure they didn't have much of a hand in the switch to E-core, though I'm sure the design was tested to ensure they meet whatever performance objectives they're after.

I have a hard time dropping $4-5 on the AC Delco filters, when I can spend $3 on a Walmart Supertech, or STP filter at Autozone, both E-cores. While I've never gone so far as to take one apart and compare, I don't believe they're any better than the cheaper variants. Yes, GM can specify their own requirements, superior materials, etc, but until that's proven to me, I'll just assume they're the same.
