Looking at possibly buying one of these to replace my Ninety Eight. The LSS is a 1998, 167,000KM. The intake gaskets, plastic manifold, and dex-cool were already replaced along with the gas tank, brake/fuel lines, pads and rotors. The SES light is on, knock sensor code but the seller is going to replace the sensor prior to selling and the motor isn't knocking. Are there any other major issues with these cars?

Which intake gaskets did he use? If you look closely you can see them.
Which upper plenum did he use (brand)? If it's AC Delco, it's a band-aid. Dorman is lifetime, APN is somewhere in between.

If the wrong parts were used (black plastic frames on the lower, AC Delco upper) you have grounds for negotiation, as you'll need to spend another 3-500 bucks to either do the work or have it done.

Thanks, I'll make sure to ask him when I go out to test drive it.

Is the L36 subject to the fire recall as well, or is it just the L67? The lines under the car were changed when the gas tank was replaced (baffles came loose and the car would stall when cornering hard). Not sure if the regulator was done though.

The last recall I knew of was for the FPR in 1997. Your 98 should have the improved part. Don't ASK the seller. Inspect and identify those parts yourself.

I actually got the recall for the FPR for my old 1999 Bonneville.

I've seen 00+ W-bodies explode the intake, so anything can happen. Call your dealer with the VIN and if it hasn't been taken care of they can/will probably do it for free.

Also, wouldn't it be an LS? The LSS was supercharged, as far as I know.

I've owned two LSS's and neither of them was supercharged. It was an option on the LSS, but not standard. Oldsmobile was never big on forced induction. I guess it just didn't fit their sedate, middle-of-the-road image. The LSS package gave the standard Eighty-Eight a pair of leather bucket seats, a center console, slightly stiffer suspension, 16-inch wheels and a generous bundle of power accessories.

The LS was basically a loaded option package with a split bench seat (power on both sides in cloth or leather) and regular mush-ride suspension. I also think the LS had 15-inch wheels as standard, but I'm not sure.

Funny thing about the LSS's "bucket" seats. From '92 to about '95, the front seats were simply two right-hand halves of the standard split bench seat, which left a gap in the middle for the console. Starting in '96, the LSS got the same seats, front and back, as the Aurora. The only difference was the LSS front seats had a single-point manual lumbar adjustment instead of the two-point power adjustment the Aurora had.

Ok, thanks for the info. Only LSS's I've ever seen were supercharged, and we all know what they say about assuming...

You seem to be the guy to ask, considering your penchant for LSS's. How difficult have you found it sourcing replacement parts/manuals for these cars? I'm negotiating a sale of a '98 tomorrow, and intend on performing some mild-medium mods in the future, but the LSS is a fair bit more sophisticated than my previous Bonnevilles in most regards. I realize you didn't have the S/C, but any leads would be great. Cheers!

Kevin, it's no different than a Bonneville, and every part you'd buy to mod a Bonneville with is the same part for that Olds. The only differences are cosmetic and interior.

The one thing I noticed, was that I couldn't find my vehicle on the Intense site on their drop down list and wasn't sure which package (possible future buy) I should be looking at, it started me thinking maybe finding reference materials mighht require some searching. Off the bat, i'm thinking FWI, but that's another thread.

Just run it as a Bonneville for the same year. The drivetrain is identical.

The LSS was largely a 'parts bin' car. Very little is unique to that model, other than the center console. Eighty-Eights are abundant on the junk yards, so most parts should be readily available.

That's great! Appreciate it, test driving tomorrow morning, I'll be sure to get some pics up as soon as possible.

I had to take my 1998 SSE in back in 2005 for the recall, and I believe 1999 was the last model year in the recall, yet I've seen THREE 2000+ L36's with the plenum blown to shreds in the past year.
