Is it possible without too much work? Let's make a discussion out of this. I've heard talk about on the GP Forums, but never here. Just curious what everybody has to say about it. Everybody knows an L67 swap would be easier to do and more easily modifiable. So let's not bring that argument in but focus more on the LS4 only.

I think you'd have a really hard time making the LS4 electronics work with your car. Not sure that the mounting points are the same at all, either.

Would be neat if you could pull it off though.

You'll need a welder, fabrication skills (or someone to mount it for you) and a way to make the GP electronics work with the Bonne, along with the fuel system, exhaust, etc. Is it possible? Yeah, probably. Is it a good swap? That's debatable.

If you could make it work with a 4t80 instead of the 4t65 j would be all for it, but that just adds another layer of extremely difficult work

The problem with the 4T80E is it takes a lot of torque to spin it. It can handle a ton of power, but it's the TH400 of the FWD world. It's strong, but steals a lot of power. It's better to build up the smaller 65E than the larger 80E. Plus you have less hassle with the mounting, etc.

Looked into it already. There are issues.

First, the subframe. LS4s were designed with flat subframes in mind (W-body), so it will not fit nice in the H-body subframe. It might do well in the 2k-up models however.

Second, the transmission. LS4-spec 4T65e's are proprietary, as the starter is actually mounted to the housing, not the engine. Being proprietary, it was designed specifically for the W-body subframe. There is NO way to bolt up the mounts needed for the H-body subframe, as those boses either don't exist or they are not reinforced. And since the starter is mounted to the trans, there is no swapping an H-body housing.

Third, the electronics. VERY advanced. There is the ECM, TCM, and the ECM NEEDS TO SEE a proper BCM...there is NO way to program the BCM out of the equation.

Lastly, it just isn't worth it. At first I was a believer in the LS4, but after spending 3 years with one I'm second guessing myself. The DoD system would be better off disabled, it consumes oil for no good reason, and the same amount of power and torque can be had with an L32 with some good tuning and mods. Plus, an L32 can be run quite well on the 2003 Grand Prix PCM once the numbers are programmed in.

And you have to get a GP 5.3L. They are shorter, specialty cast blocks to fit in the GPs.

There are plenty of aftermarket ignition/computer options for the GEN III and IV options, if you're good with a welder and fabrication, building your own mounts isn't out of the question. Perhaps you could start with some RWD ones and build off them.

You're pretty much building a custom car however.

Ill use my canned response to this type of question:

:stupid:

A used LS4 isn't cheap, and new is even more expensive. Could have a nice LS1 Camaro for not much more $$$....

Even with Brads DOD 5.3..... In 4 cylinder mode it still did no better than any 3800 made... At least with the 3800 and cruise set at roughly 75 mph you could still nail down 30 Mpg... when you are out of boost cruising with an L67 or L32 you can get into some good mileage numbers... I have heard as high as 34 depending on speed...

Granted I like the LS4 and would have loved one in the van... But the cost was the factor that threw that idea away...

Can it be done.... Heck yeah.... Is it worth it... Depends, its all in the eye of the beholder.... Could become a very expensive project that would leave you wishing for something else...lol
