about 3 years ago i was beset by multiple ECC problems. at that time i became frustrated with trying to repair with parts from the JY. i even converted my system to manual. thanks to this forum i eventually became aware of the usual problems with the 92-99 series ECC and have returned my system to auto. as part of repairing the ECC, i replaced blower motor control module, airmix actuator and repair of the collapsed nipples of the program control module. as of this post the ECC is working beautifully and has been for about a year now.

but, during my period of frustration particularly with the blower motor control module (my junk yard is just that, a junk yard-tried probably half dozen BCMs with no luck), i decided to try and build my own BCM.

i don't recommend building your own. instead try the JY and if that fails, buy one from Rock Auto which is what i eventually did.

however, i did eventually succeed in developing a BCM and thought i would post pics of some of the process. i have checked it in my 96 SE and it does work but i removed it since my ECC is working so well. the only purpose maybe if anyone else is interested, would be as a test module if you suspect your BCM has failed.

basically i took a failed BCM and adapted it to hold the new parts and therefore it is plug and play.

the electronic key to operation of the DIY BCM is a component similar to a transistor (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor-MOSFET). the MOSFET is gated on and off by a sawtooth waveform generated by the added circuitry. the point at which the sawtooth waveform is allowed to pass to the MOSFET gate is determined by a dc signal from the program control module. the signal from the program control module has to be about 3 volts to turn on the blower motor and is about 10 volts for maximum blower speed.

just posting for general info. i suspect the OEM BCM operates similarly.

thanks JDB. circuit board is from Radio Shack (about $10) and is the most expensive part. i ordered electronic parts from the various parts surplus houses on the internet. electronic parts came to about $10. my time is free (retired). compare this to Rock Auto (about $100).

i do intend to use this DIY when/if my Rock Auto BCM fails. i will post reliability info when that happens.

It better last for $100! The junkyard ones i'm getting are $30 a pop, so now i'm in $90 deep. Next one will have to be rockauto.

Is that telephone wire?

yes, it is telephone wire. the circuit board is the type that you just insert the ends of wire or circuit components into the receptacles, no soldering involved. stripping the ends of telephone wire works perfectly.
