Dad found a 98SE that he really liked, car is in decent shape (7 out of 10) and runs good. The seller stated that the engine and transmission were from a 2001 Park Avenue, and he was fairly certain its a 4T65HD. I do know that the shifter will not go all the way down to the lowest setting (1 on a 3-2-1 shifter) and he says thats because its the HD. hmmmm.

The car is already purchased and Dad likes it, so he's willing to live with it since he just drives in OD anyways, but how do I identify if this transmission is truly a 4t65hd?

You will need to get the numbers off the trans tag... Only way to know without taking the trans apart

Shouldn't matter if its an HD or not... the shifter should move to all gears. They are filling ya with BS.

They may not have changed the shifter linkage... The arm that comes off the trans is specific to a Column or Console shift... This to me sounds like your issue...

But when you can I would like to see the tranny numbers..

I concur, the only diff is the diff, lol. Everything else (other than the gearing) is the same from -HD to non-HD.

Were they supposedly out of the same car? The L36 was never put in front of the -HD trans in an OE app, that I'm aware of.

Thanks. I had my doubts about the HD part, and yes they both came from the same Park avenue. I told him I didn't think the HD was offered with the NA engine, he said his mechanic assured him it was the HD. Everyone is happy with the car otherwise but I want the shifter to work as intended.

Don, that's something I never considered, so if its as easy as finding the correct shift bracket, that should handle it :)

Where do I look for the numbers?

ETA, Andrew, do you have a shifter arm from a bad transmission lying around I could buy?

Hmmm, don't think so.

The only true HD Diff is the 3.29 used in the supercharged cars and the LS4 V8( 2.93 Overall ).. If you were to set the 3.05 and 2.86 next to the 3.29 HD you would not be able to miss the difference between the two..

Not sure but you may be able to look at the bracket that the shift linkage attaches to.. Most of the time it will say " Column " or " Console " .... Some do some dont sooo...lol

As for the tranny ID tag... Look on the rear side of the trans left of the diff cover.. You should see a tag affixed to the trans case...

Update, its fixed. Original shifter bracket did indeed state "Column" right on it. Found one at a boneyard that had a floor shift, acquired the bracket and now its as smooth as butter. Still haven't crawled under to look at the ID tag though. Thanks for the help with that portion of the problem :)
