Who do we have near Rawlins, Wyoming? Nearest member? And how far?

FYI, we have a member stranded with car trouble smack in the middle of Wyoming, wherever the heck that is. Trying to find nearby members for possible help (if needed).

Very much a head-scratcher problem. Details later.

myfirstbonnie Matt, I'm shipping out a new PCM to him today, hopefully that fixes it.

The car is sitting in Wyoming and we are in a rental getting us to Ohio. We will be bringing the PCM Andrew is sending back with us. If that doesn't fix it we will be trailering it back.

That sucks Matt, it's never fun to have car problems on a long trip. I hope the PCM fixes it up.

To fill everyone in, here is the original issues and work done:

This is in the 2k

Leading to the failure: Travelling down the interstate with cruise set at 75mph (always running premium gas) and suddenly the car starts vibrating the way it feels when you drive on the rumble strips on the shoulder.

We see an exit and get off where there was nothing around and took a look. At night with a flashlight, everything looked good. No SES light, wideband reading where it has since installed and no KR. Engine idles very rough and has a loss of power. If accelerator is pressed too much it will backfire through the TB. Boost gauge stays at -2 unless you rev it in neutral, but never goes below -5.

Get back on the highway and backpedal 14 miles to where we are now. Spent the day looking at everything possible with the minimum tools.

Things done or checked:

checked vacuum lines and all appeared good, but later found them cracked and broken
pulled plugs: all are black and #6 was wet and burn off like fuel with a bic lighter
noticed boost control was bouncing instead of pulled up at idle
pulled plug wires from coils and plugs and getting good spark
disconnected exhaust to verify cat not plugged
did a finger compression check on #3 and #6
verified cam interrupter was in front of sensor when #1 at TDC
sprayed to check for vacuum leaks
removed belts to verify load issue
unplugged MAP and got code P0107 and P1107 as expected
unplugged MAF and did not change the idle
used Aeroforce to reset fuel trims
LTFT is high at 10.2
STFT is at 0.7
Pressed the shrader valve on fuel rail while car was idling and got a good spay of fuel

The last thing I did was took it to the local GM dealer and they looked at it. Tech said he did not notice any unusual sounds from the valvetrain. He could not get the TECH II to communicate with the PCM. The car does have a custom tune to the stock PCM.

Basically, the car has some sort of random misfires and no clue why.

So, our plan now is to drive it to Laramie in the morning to get a rental car. They said it is fine to leave it set there. Finish our trip to Ohio and return the rental. Pick up a U-Haul with a dolly and tow it back to Oregon.

I think that's enough to say that the PCM is failing/bad. I got a crazy issue with the Ciera that seems PCM related as well... Code 42 off and on... can't track it down.

The PCM was confirmed when he disconnected the O2 and IAT and no codes were thrown. There is an odd history with PCM issues on this particular car that lead us to suspect grounding issues in the wiring harness that will be investigated later.

I got the PCM from Andrew today. I also got a cheap meter in case I have to check out some wiring. We are hitting the road at 4 am on Sunday morning to return the rental.

Forgot to mention that the JY tried to sell me a PCM from a Century. He did not have any from a Bonneville, so I only have the one Andrew sent.

I did find the vacuum harness at a local dealer and it cost $28.12.

Now this is what I call an online community that knows how to mobilize! I keep telling friends of mine that I dont think I will ever buy another car that doesnt have some kind of online support group.

Big kudos to everyone involved...this is inspirational stuff!

Bear in mind there was a whole morning of texts and phone calls during early troubleshooting before it even hit the Forum. This is a very small snapshot of what happened that day.
