They're going for it, on 4, 5, or 6 cylinders at any given moment. Averaging minimum 25mpg (with a cam) while I spoke with them.

Godspeed, Rubber Chicken.

As I believe you said you don't have access to your FSM, this is the information on P0336.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

The 18X reference signal is produced by the ignition control module. The ICM calculates the 18X reference signal by filtering the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor 18X pulses when the engine is running and CKP sync pulses are also being received. The PCM uses the 18X reference signal to calculate engine RPM and crankshaft position at engine speeds below 1200 RPM . The PCM constantly monitors the number of pulses on the 18X reference circuit and compares the number of 18X reference pulses to the number of 3X reference pulses and CAM signal pulses being received. If the PCM receives an incorrect number of pulses on the 18X reference circuit, DTC P0336 will set and the PCM will use the 3X reference signal circuit for fuel and ignition control. The engine will continue to start and run using the 3X reference and CAM signals only.

CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC
The engine is running (3X reference pulses are being received).

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC

* The ratio of 18X reference pulses to 3X reference pulses received by the PCM does not equal 6 to 1.
* The ratio of 3X reference pulses to CAM signal pulses received by the PCM equals 6 to 1.
* The above conditions are present for 290 of 300 test samples.

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS

* The PCM will illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) during the second consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test has been run and failed.
* The PCM will store conditions which were present when the DTC set as Freeze Frame and Failure Records data.
* If the misfire is determined to be catalyst damaging, the PCM will flash the MIL.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE MIL/DTC

* The PCM will turn OFF the MIL during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic has been run and passed.
* The History DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles have occurred without a malfunction.
* The DTC can be cleared by using a scan tool.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS

IMPORTANT: Rotate the engine crankshaft until the 18X sensor has a voltage of more than 4 volts before performing any Diagnostic Aids.

An intermittent may be caused by a faulty connection, rubbed through wire insulation, or a wire broken inside the insulation. Check for the following conditions:

* A faulty connection at the PCM, ignition control module, or CKP sensor-Inspect the harness and connectors for improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, and faulty terminal to wire connection. Use a corresponding mating terminal to test for proper terminal tension.
* Inspect the wiring harness for damage. If the harness appears to be OK, disconnect the PCM, turn the ignition on and observe a voltmeter connected to the 1 8X reference circuit at the PCM harness connector while moving connectors and wiring harnesses related to the ICM. A change in voltage will indicate the location of the malfunction.
* Incorrect harness routing near secondary ignition components
* Secondary ignition wires arcing to wiring harness-Check the secondary ignition wires for carbon tracking or other signs of damage.
* A malfunctioning ignition coil-Remove the ignition coils and inspect the ignition control module and coils for cracks, carbon tracking, or other signs that indicate that the coil secondary circuit is arcing to the ICM or ICM wiring harness. Refer to Ignition Coil(s) Replacement.

Reviewing the Failure Records vehicle mileage since the diagnostic test last failed may help determine how often the condition that caused the DTC to be set occurs. This may assist in diagnosing the condition.

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

10. This vehicle is equipped with a PCM which utilizes an Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-only Memory (EEPROM) . When the PCM is replaced, the new PCM must be programmed.

Motor seized up 50 miles from Rock Springs, Wyoming (150 miles from the Mormons).

Horrible racket from the middle of the rear cylinder head/chamber. 1 hour wait for a tow truck, tonight in a hotel, then a rental home to Oregon. My horrible feeling about a mechanical misfire came true, but not surprising considering the massive troubleshooting effort that effectively ruled out the spark circuit and fueling. We had a gut feeling, and they played the risk.

The plan is to return for the car in a week or two with a dolly.

I had a gut feeling that something like that was going to happen.

What do you think was the root cause?

Dang!

Going to be cheaper to have the car shipped back than dolly it.

2000 miles round trip, 15mpg on the way there, 12mpg on the way back. Over $500 just in fuel costs.

Poor Chicken, Matt and Wendy. Does anyone else feel like his cam may have something to do w/ it? 2 engines is a little more than coincidence...

There was no visible wear whatsoever on the cam during the last motor swap. It's not the cam. This L32 (I believe the first we've lost?) would have failed the original owner just the same. Unless we have a broken spring or something. Just too hard to know until the autopsy.

Dang. I was really hoping that it wasn't mechanical.

Me too. The autopsy should be interesting, for sure. I wanna see what the head, HG, piston and valves look like.

Rock Springs is only 3 hrs away. I wish I had known this is where this thread was...I was "following" it in the gearhead section. :banghead:

:withstupid:

I would have been happy to have grabbed a tow dolly and at least bring it here (it would be safer at my house, shortens the drive to come back for it, and rental car selection is probably better here, lol!).

If there is anything I can do, you have my phone number (check the gearhead section).

We had this option in mind last night, and I asked Matt to plan for that. I'll give you details in the GH section.

Just called Kim and asked her if she wanted to go to lunch tomorrow.

She said sure.

I said ...in Rock Springs.

She said OK. :)

The wayward Oregonians seemed no worse for wear, all things considered. Having serious car troubles on the road, a long way from home, truly sucks. But whaddya gonna do? So they're making the best of it and pressing on home right now. Reminds me of when my 93 SSE made a snack of #3 rod bearing on the way to San Francisco several years ago. It spent a week in Winnemucca NV (yes, there really IS a Winnemucca) while we pressed on to SF and picked it up on the way home. No sense in worrying about these things - they is what they is. :)

I want pics of your truck towing the chicken, Stan.

Always glad to see fellow members going out of their way to help each other. That's what this place is all about.
