The paper one? It doesn't really matter as long as all the holes line up.

If it's anything like my 1997, many people don't even use a paper gasket. They just spread on a little Permatex and bolt it down. But I used a paper gasket. I just forgot to actually put the thermostat in the housing before I bolted it up. Had to undo / redo it all.

I just used the o-ring it came with. No RTV or gasket. The o-ring should angle down, like the base of the t-stat, as it's set in the housing.

An L27, due to it's age, should always use the paper gasket. Most are pitted around that surface. The paper gasket should be forward towards the radiator, and it will only point either left or right when installed so the holes line up. The 2 bolt holes and thermostat hole are not symmetrical in the gasket like the Series 2. So as mentioned, it will really line up only one way.

Ultimately, the tab doesn't matter. You can cut it off if you want. Just make sure all 3 holes line up correctly.
