Year and Trim: 2005 Pontiac Bonneville GXP
I am in the market for a Bonneville and I found a 2005 GXP for $9k with 82K miles on it. I have owned other Pontiacs before but never a Bonneville. I like the bonneville because of the style but I do not know much about the reliability and if this car is worth this amount. I currently own a 04 Toyota Camry which is nice and reliable but BORING to drive, even to look at. LOL... Can anyone tell me a little bit about the car and if you think it's a good buy. Thanks in advance for your help in my decision.

Our 05 has 71k on it and our only expenses since we got it at 46k have been tires and basic maintenance. It needs the impact sensor for the air bag replaced, but that has been it on our end. Do you know if there are any maintenance records? The 05 Northstars are more reliable than the previous versions, but it's still a Northstar. There have been a few members who have had transmission issues, but the stock 4T80E transmission is a very beefy unit from the factory. The biggest downfall is the fuel mileage. My dad doesn't drive like a maniac but drives on back roads 20 miles each way and he gets just over 20 mpg. The reason is that since the Bonne is such a big car and the Northstar is a high RPM motor, not a low end torquer, it has 3.71 gears to make up for that. 65 is 2000 RPM, 80 is almost 2600. Other than the fuel mileage, it's an excellent car. Handles great, smooth quiet and comfortable down the road and is very nice on the inside with the suede inserts in the seats and the carbon fiber trim. Any other specific questions, just ask.

Thanks for your reply. I ran a carfax on the vehicle and it gave pretty good details on the maintanence history. I am going back to take a look at it tonight with my mechanic. My bestfriend owns a 01 Bonneville SSEI and has had normal wear and tear stuff done other that the trans seems to be going out now. I like the way his car rides and look in the inside and out. Thanks for the gas milage info cause that was another fear of mine cause I have a commute 25 miles one way to work. The car is nice and worth a little more in gas for me to be happy cause my Camry is not fun. lol

The GXP will definitely be an upgrade in the fun department, lol. It's only $5 a day in gas if you drive 50 miles a day. I would suggest running synthetic oil and getting the fuel filter changed when you get it. The fuel filter on our GXP appeared to be original @ 48k when I replaced it...

Run, run far! :)

Seriously though, while it may be reliable at anything sub 100k, you'd realisticlly only get 18k out of it before you'd seriously want to spend some money on it. And truthfully, I'm weary of any Northstar with >100k on the clock. Not that they're bad motors, and many do go beyond that, just that it's an overly complicated 4 cammer with mileage on it, from a manufacturer that doesn't specialize in 4 cam, 32 valve, V8's. Especially those shoehorned into a FWD platform that was designed for a large V6, which adds cost on any labor bill you'll get doing those repairs on a car with >100k on it.

I had 87k on mine when I sold it, and it ran like a champ. But I knew, come 100k, it was gone. I just ended up moving sooner than later...

Well, I guess mine is on borrowed time then....lol

Just better than 140,000 miles and still running strong. I had planned to dump this thing at 150k but have since decided to wait a little longer.

To qoute myself...

Did you read this? Or glance over it? It was purposely put in there to hopefully avoid people from going, "Well, I got 200k on mine, so I must be rare!" type of comments.

Don't get cheeky.

I read your message and responded accordingly. Well, maybe not as thoroughly as I should have. :P

I bought a GXP almost 18 months ago now and i love it, every option needed and more, very comfy, enough power for a car its size. I love it more everytime i drive it.
its definitely an eye catcher, mine turn heads everytime i drive by
its my DD, as for maintenance nothin serious so far on mine, its still under warranty, i had few emission issues, nothin nothin serious, very normal for a car 5 years old

ok, i have a 02 SE with a twisted frame that was repaired and i'm in the same situation. I know a private dealer who buys cars and he has a 05 gxp black and willing to sell it to me for 9,000 with 25k on the engine. I feel i do need to upgrade or at least get a sunroof but i do love my SE with exterior mods but i have priced a frame with arms for $300 and i just need guidance?

xrob, you'd get a bunch more valid info in your replies if you didn't dig up a 3-month old topic from another member. People have to skim through a dusty old topic just to get to your question.
