I'm in north western Pa.

I'll be using General Altimax Arctic snows this winter. Unstudded. From what the reviews on TireRack say they're one rocking winter tire.

Non-studded Winterforce's 225 width. They are good on ice, but they really excel when you get into 3-4 inches of snow. Over the past 3 winters I have found that the tires can handle any depth of snow until the car bottoms out.

We're supposed to get snow tonight and I'm caught with my pants down....still have my summer tires on and my snow tires are back home 200 miles away :???: Hopefully this snow holds off until the weekend.

Just bought 2 new Blizzak WS70s... They cost a bit more, but are by far the best winter tire I have ever owned

To those running only two winter tires or studs only on the front... be VERY careful that you're not creating a dangerous oversteer situation. You may have traction up front, but the moment you go and take a turn the rears will be the first to swing out...

I too run the General Altimax Arctic in 215/60/16 - slightly skinnier than stock. Soft andsoupy sidewalls that are no good for handling (typical for any winter rubber), but winter traction and stability are excellent. You'd have to spend a LOT more to get a better performing tire.

I'm going to try Goodyear Ultragrips this winter. They are studdable, but I won't be installing studs. They seem to be rated quite highly and have the deepest tread of the ones offered from TireRack.

I find that the ice radials have a shallow tread so the soft rubber wears really fast. They're great on ice, but only for the first winter or two I think. After that, the soft rubber wears down, the sipes have usually worn, and the tire begins to become more of an all season.

I would honestly say that you will be very happy with any designated winter / snow tire over an all season. If money is an issue, go with the cheapest you can find and you will still be very greatful.

The posting that states about only running studded or unstudded winter tires on the front is dead on.
Here in my area all the tire shops have stopped putting winter tires only on the front of either choice.
One has a hugh lawsuit against them because someone was killed because they only had winters on the front of a fwd.
So none will install any winters unless you do all four. I just take the rims and tires in and get them mounted.
Also if I'm correct. All season tires in some states are not considered "winter" tires.
I may be wrong on that but I think it's correct.

Just put on my Blizzaks yesterday.
Love them.

Any dedicated winter tire will be better than an all season.

You guys don't know the meaning of poor roads till you come here though :p
