Year and Trim: 1958 boneville conv
Hello! I bought 58 boneville conv at Mecum in August. The VIN reads P558H7777. The car has no cowl tag. Question - where can I get any info on the car to be sure that it is real convertible and not a conversion and is it possible to order anywhere the cowl tag info and reproduce it? Thank you for any help!

I believe the Pontiac Historical Society is good at that kind of thing. I think you can order repro window stickers and such, as well.

I'm sure a 58 Service Manual would help break it down. I know I have one somewhere but I hav'nt seen it in years. Are you a member of P.O.C.I. (Pontiac Oakland Club International)? They have several group experts for each model that can tell you more than you will ever want to know.
Just a thought.

from http://starchief57.tripod.com/vin.htm

VIN decoding for 1958:

First digit is the assembly plant:
Atlanta, Ga - A Kansas City, Ks - K
South Gate, Ca - C Linden, NJ - L
Framingham, Ma - F Pontiac, MI - P
Arlington, Tx - T Wilmington, De - W

Second digit identifies the series:
5 = series 25, Bonneville/Chieftain conv.
7 = series 27, Chieftain/Star Chief station wagon
8 = series 28, Star Chief, Super Chief

Third and forth digit identify the model year (1958)

Fifth digit identifies the transmission type:

H = hydra-matic S = syncro-mesh

Last four digits represent the basic production number

I decoded it the same way, but there are trhree possibilities for this car:
Bonnevile hard top
Bonneville conv
Chieftain conv
