I'm wondering how you folks (and I'm sorry this is leaning towards the S/C crowd) describe the S/C whine to friends and family who have never heard it before?

I describe mine as followed:

When warming up:
"It sounds like a shop vac. Like if I got to close to the intake it would suck my T-Shirt off"

When giving it a bit of gas, in gear:
"It sounds like I'm driving a drill press down the street" OR
"It sounds like I'm sitting on a belt sander"

I find it hard to describe, what about you?

Adam

Describing my own varies by which car. They're both distinctly different. S1 and S2 are also remarkably different regardless of intake style.

Short answer? Every owner describes every car differently.

Good answers here folks. This should prove to be funny.

I see others leaning towards some type of power tool, but not sure which one.

Will: How do you describe the tone differences between Zilla and SLEper?

I think the major differences between Zilla and SLEeper are that one is extremely modded, and one isn't as extremely modded, lol.

You'd be surprised in the sound of both. SLEeper is louder and more distinct than a any modded S2 out here on the West Coast. S1's wind up into boost quicker, and don't for get the SLEeper has the Zilla's old (one of 6) ADTR intakes. The only intake actually purpose-built for the Bonneville. It runs the same filter part number I originally test-fit before it was commercially available as well, the RX-4750. SLEeper is also one step down on pulley size, has a port-matched LIM (from Zilla) as well as Zilla's second ported supercharger (but first Gen3....I have 4 now including 1 spare, 1 machined for the intercooler and one on each car), and a shift kit with the rebuilt trans including adjustable modulator. Other than the trans, all the performance parts are simply being 'stored' on the SLEeper for lack of shelf space (yes, even the 2.55" pulley on the SLE came from the Zilla).

SLE sounds similar to an Indy car trans as you roll through first gear quickly.

Zilla sounds similar, but throatier, even though it's running a MUCH smaller pulley.

Things I've proven that have an effect on the loudness and tone of the whine:

Intake type, MAF screen (in/out), porting the SC, ported LIM (no kidding), LIM desing (Gen2 vs. Gen3 Series 1), and ported heads. Yes, that changed the Zilla's intake tone as well.

Another one of the six checking in :P I've yet to really compare with an S2. How does the ADTR stack up in noise against say, an FWI?

Never swapped intakes between the cars to be able to tell. And both would be distinctly different than each other with just open TB's.

Oh, I definitely give mine more respect than just comparing it to a power tool. One thing I enjoy in particular is going past my neighborhood gas station on the corner, and giving it a bit of throttle. It's fun to watch people's heads pop up from fueling their cars to see what just turned a corner and sped away (while observing the posted speed limit)

And Will, hopefully I can make it your way sometime so I can hear a side by side comparison

If you come to Sunday's mini-meet, you can hear an old ADTR on an S1 with a stock pulley :P

It definitely seems like a prototype too. Behind the silicone couplers it looks like somebody cut it with an angle grinder :P

I have #2 and both ends are beautifully machined. Yours had to be modified in some way. I cut my coupler at an angle for the fit, not the pipe. The ADTR was originally designed for the L36 angled TB flange on the UIM. After my fit (I was #2), he realized 2 different angles were needed, or rather more bend in the L67.
