I have read that it is hard to mod the 96 ssei's. I was wondering why this is?

It has the 4t60, and there is not much in the market for performance type products there, either hard parts and makes PCM programming difficult. I do believe there is a place that can do PCM's, check the Vendor's forum.
Otherwise most series 2 performance parts will work.

It's because it's the only year that had the 4t60 trans behind the S2 L67. There's not as much support for the older 4t60 trans, and until recently the only way to do anything with the pcm was to tune it yourself with a DHP powrtuner (now discontinued). Sinister performance (GM tuners) now supports the '96 pcm which makes it much easier to mod the 1996 cars. For the most part, any of the engine parts listed for the 97+ cars will work on yours.

Not really 'harder'. You can do anything, you just go to a different vendor for the PCM than most would.

The 4T60 trans can be built with the same peformance features to a point as any 65. It's just done a little differently. Peformance parts are available. The primary difference is that a shift kit install requrires the removal of the trans rather than through the pan like a 65, but it's a much more involved (and beneficial) shift kit in the long run.

As stated, all other Series 2 parts are good for you as far as the engine is concerned.
