We bought our 97 Bonneville SE in Nov. 98. it had the 40th annv. badges and floor mats,( we bought it from a private party with 18k miles) but now after some research it seems like it's not a 40th after all. It does not have Y40 in the vin no. which I read on a bonneville forum that, that's one of the ways to tell if you have a 40th or not.
Does anyone have anymore info on this? I would appreciate any input.
Thank you. Jaime.

If it doesn't have Y40 in the VIN, its not a 40th edition. Whoever you bought it from must have put them on it. I'm 99% sure that they all have Y40 in the VIN.

The VIN wont be different...
The Y40 is an RPO code. Check your spare tire cover, there will be a small sticker with a bunch of three digit codes, Y40 should be on there...

http://www.bonnevilleforum.net/

According to that they do.

EDIT I guess I can't link to bonneville forum. Maybe someone with a 40th can confirm.

Quote:
40th Anniversary Edition: In 1997 Pontiac made six models: the SE, the 40th Anniversary SE, the SSE, the 40th Anniversary SSE, the SSEi, and the 40th Anniversary SSEi. The 40th Anniversary SSEi is the rarest model with a total production of 637 units. The 40th anniversary models all had a VIN with Y40—sorry guys, no fakes allowed.

Robb is correct, it on the RPO codes, check your trunk.

and while your there you may as well know what the rest of those codes mean :)

found in our techinfo section http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... f=39&t=793

Ok, I just realized that the info I was looking at there is in the Techinfo here too.
http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1672

If it is indeed the RPO, then that info is misleading, and should be changed.

My guess is it's in both, because Y40 is also listed in the RPO codes like you said.

Y40 will def. be on the spare tire cover. Owning one myself (and the rarest one) :).

The Y40 won't be in the vin.

Here's the VIN from a 40th that's on eBay

If that's the case, then the Techinfo article should be changed. I'd like someone who has Y40 in the RPO codes, to tell us if its also in the VIN or not. It makes sense that it wouldn't be, the only reason I think it is is because thats what I've read.

I found a few on Carsoup that you can see the badges in, and none of them have it in the VIN. You guys are probably right, I've had false info put into my head! haha.

There wouldn't be place in the vin for it anyways with the way GM VINs are laid out....hopefully this helps.

Viper, since you seem the type that needs to be informed correctly as you like to give advice...I'll tell you exactly what I mean.

Decoding a GM car vin was very easy to do until recently. I can't for the life of me figure out my truck's VIN the way I can an 86+ model GM car.

for example, a 1989 Pontiac Bonneville LE, 1G2HX54CXKW555555

1 - Country (US)
G - Company (General Motors)
2 - Marque (Pontiac)
H - Body Designation
X - Trim (LE) (the H and X together after 2 means Bonneville, since its the only Pontiac H vehicle. Y and Z is SSE and SE)
5 - 4 Door Sedan
4 - Restraints (Automatic Belts)
C - Engine, (LN3)
X - Check Digit
K - Model Year (1989)
W - Assembly (Willow Run, MI)
5 - Serial
5 - Serial
5 - Serial
5 - Serial
5 - Serial
5 - Serial

Therefore, a normal 1997 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi 40th Anniversary would look similar to this

1G2HZ521XVH555555, United States, General Motors, Pontiac, Bonneville SSE/SSEi, Sedan, Dual Frontal Air Bags w/ Auto Belts, L67 Supercharged 3800 Engine, Check digit, 1997 Model Year, Built in Flint, MI, and its 6 digit production Serial.

Most of the important parts of this are from memory, so if any of that is seriously off base, (it happens hah) someone let me know so more wrong info doesn't get spread.

Thanks for the info. You are right I do like to help out when I can, but I am very cautious to not to give incorrect information. I knew there was some format to the VINs I just didn't know what it was, so therefore I didnt know if there was a way it could be included or not. That makes a lot of sense to me now, the only thing I knew before was that a 1 in the 8th spot was supercharged.

To the OP: Looks like the verdict is to check you RPO's for Y40!

Thanks to all who responded. I looked at the spare tire cover, and sure enough, Y40 is on the sticker. So I guess we have a 40th after all. My wife will be pleased, she's the one that picked out the car.
Thanks, Jaime. :beerchug:

The SE and SLE Trims for 93-99 use the 1G2HX52 Vin Designation... If you have a real 40th, it will have Y40 Listed on the RPO sticker.. The Y40 is the same for the SSE and SSEi and will be listed in the RPO's..

Don't get me started on the SLE Package... :P

As someone who has a 40th its only listed on the RPO sticker, not on the VIN. The VIN doesn't take into account the added package.

Welcome though to the 40th club! Theres not many of us, but a few.
