Hi

I got a new snout seal when i got a my new coupler hoping to install them this weekend before i start driving again.
My question is there a special way to do it, do i need to know any tricks or things to worry about, Ive never done a snout seal before i just wanted to check before i did it just in case theres i might miss.

Thanks Keith

define "snout seal"

There are no actual gaskets used in the assembly of the M62 supercharger.

Just use anaerobic gasket maker.

Oh, you are rebuilding the nose drive also? You'll need a hydraulic press.

Unless your nosedrive is leaking, just a simple coupler change is probably all you really need.

Its not leaking or anything. I cant hear the couple rattling around, i just figured that while i was there i would replace that seal to i didnt know that i would have to rebulid it maybe ill just do the coupler for now cause i dont have acess to a press any more.. I would like to rebuild it later down the road.

If there's no issues w/ it, I say leave sleeping dogs lie.

save the seal for when this one fails all it is is a spring clip that fits in a groove in the end of the snout so step by step:

remove nut on the end of he pulley
remove the pulley
remove the spring clip
remove seal

install is the reverse of the above steps

p.s. the seal tends to get destroyed on the way out i took mine out by drilling two screws opposite of eachother to pry against. reason being i wouldn't score and damage the snout walls.

Yes, it's possible to change it with the procedure above, but it can get ugly. If it's not leaking yet, it's best to leave it for now.

If you later decide to replace the snout seal, I know how to do it without removing the snout from the supercharger and using a press. I've done it on 3 different M62 units of mine, all with success, but it took a bit of creativity and care. I bought Viton seals; the OEM seals are Teflon and have an odd sprialing groove that I've never seen on any other seal.

Viton is a bad idea for most high-mileage M62's. Over time, the original seal will actually wear a groove in the shaft. Viton is less flexible, and takes a LONG time to 'seat' in the grove of the input shaft. Nitrile should be the primary choice of any M62 still on the road. Your chances of leaks are far less, and it will easily outlast your ownership of the car for less money.
