Year and Trim: 1993 ssei supercharged bright white
hi guys, the short version is about 4-5 years ago my bonnie was having problems with the boost. in short when i hit the gas and the boost gauge went from -10 to 0 it was fine but if i pushed anywhere past that the engine would sputter and hardly accelerate and when i brought it back down to 0, then engine would be fine again. i found out that the car had the original fuel filter, (it had something like 165k miles on it) so i figured that was the problem and had it replaced. the result of that is that i got back 5ish pounds of boost back, aka i could push it past the 0 pounds up to 5ish pounds and the engine would sing and sound beautiful, but if i push it past the 5ish pounds of boost the EXACT same problem happened again, the exact same problem with the sputtering. i am incredibly confused as to what is going on, im thinking that it is a fuel delivery problem bc when i got a new fuel filter i some of the boost came back, but im confused as to what else is the problem. im pretty sure its not the fuel injectors that are the problem because for about a year now i put in a fuel system cleaner every other fill up. thats why im stumped. i know its not the supercharger itself because i just got a brand new one, refurbished though, the entire supercharger was replaced so i dont think it is the supercharger. i dont know what else could be the problem. and i only ever run shell premium 93 octane so its not the fuel itself a problem.

can someone please help me out here, i know she is 20 years old with 180k on her but she runs like the day she rolled off the assembly line, and i hit the supercharger seriously once in a blue moon, usually just to help blow out anything thats been building up and let her have a little fun, so i hardly ever use the supercharger, but "knock on wood" if i ever get into a situation to avoid an accident or something like that, i want the engine to get the full 10 pounds of boost, i dont want her to be handicapped at only 5 pounds, bc when i go past 5 pounds and the engine starts to sputter the car basically stops accelerating, and if i ever get into a situation where i need the full 10 pounds i would like to have it. i want to fix this problem mainly for my piece of mind, knowing she is at her 100% full strength.

so please if you have any inkling, ideas and solutions please let me know, im very very proud of that car and i want her to be at full strength.
thanks in advance and cheers!!

It won't ever hit 10 psi stock, I believe around 7 - 8 is stock full psi. As for the problem though, when was the last time plugs and wires were changed? That's where I would look first.

When mine acted the same way, it was my fuel pump. I tried the regulator first, and it got a little better, and I always kept the filter pretty fresh. The pump fixed it. And since a new filter helped it some, I'd lean toward further fuel delivery being the problem.

To crash93ssei, I actually just changed the wires 3 days ago and according to 00beast and verified by an Internet search, the platinum plugs I just put in with the wires are a BIG no-no so I'm going out today to get iridium plugs and yea ur right, when I say 10 psi I meant on the dash where it says -10/0/+10

And to j wikoff, are there any tests my mechanic can do on the fuel pump too see if that's the problem

Ok, so we can be pretty sure the plugs / wires are good then.

I know on the dash it says -10 / 0 / +10, but the needle won't ever completely reach +10, basically about half way between the mark that would be +5 and the +10 mark is full boost.

You can have the fuel pressure tested to make sure it is within the specs it should be. A plugged filter can kill a fuel pump in a hurry, so that would certainly be a good thing to look into and the next thing I would go for now that the plugs and wires are known good.

EDIT... see what the car does after you throw in a set of the right plugs. Either way though, it would be a good idea to at least check the fuel pressure on the car with that many miles and that age even if the plugs cure the problem.

You'd want to test the fuel pressure at the test port on the rail at idle with and without the vacuum line attached to the fuel pressure regulator.

gotcha, j wikoff, im gonna do it this weekend and report the results, i just want her to be at 100% strength, i have no idea how many horses have been lost over the last 20 years, even with the new k&n filter which says it adds 5-7 hp, im thinking its lost a few horses over the years, and i know back when she was brand new with 205hp, would smoke most cars today, in the same class as my car though lol, im not talking about a mustang gt or something like that

Do you have any way of scanning the car? some of the code readers will stream data.. any codes? id be supprised if the plugs were the issue but you never know. I would also suggest testing the fuel pressure when it spudders, the pump and filter are newer you could be loosing pressure up top under boost which would be a bad FPR. Testing it idle wont tell you if your losing pressure under hard boost.

AND... his car is a 93 ssei, they might be boosting up to 10psi stock. I know the pullies are tiny on thoes SI 3800's w/ M62 chargers.

90% chance the sputtering you are hearing is blowing the spark out just like blowing out a candle. Put in new spark plugs don't waste your money on the finewire plugs just get the standard ~$2 each plugs. DO NOT buy bosch plugs they are garbage. Use either autolight 103s or NGK R5724-8. gap them to .030 and rock and roll. Also make sure you have a good set of coils on the car make sure they are for the L67. The L67 has a hotter spark then the N/A L36 does so L36 coils will make the car run bad in boost as it cant keep the plugs lit.

I have had this problem before in the past and this is how I have fixed it. I work at a dyno shop and we have done numerous dyno tests on different spark plugs and these are the ones that run the best. My car put down 300.1WHP so my post count might be low here but ive been through all of this and im not new to the L67s.

^Note on the above. They all had the same coils in 92-95 or 96, which were the same as the L36 specific coils later on. It wouldn't hurt to get the newer L67 coils if you're getting new ones. And given a more or less stock 93, I'd go with NGK TR6 at .060. I think ZZP sells them pre-gapped.

:stupid:

They all come "pre-gapped", but I'd double check if you get copper plugs. Iridium plugs are too delicate, you have to trust they're the right gap...

That's why you don't buy iridium plugs. I have seen several motors that have been trashed because the chunk of iridium has fallen out of the spark plug and gotten stuck between the piston and cylinder wall.
