STOCK CD player with equilizer and clock on my 98 SE (RPO code UP3)

I've had this problem with my car ever since I owned it, however it's just a display issue (the unit still functions properly) and it's not consistantly messed up. Also worth mentioning might be that my volume knob is nutty as well, you can turn it CCW and the volume will go up but only sometimes. I just use the volume buttons on the steering wheel so it never bothered me. Other than that, everything functions as it should.

Now the problem. The problem is that sometimes the display just simply goes nuts. It looks like the Predator's self-destruct bracelet from the Predator movies. The unit will still function perfectly fine even while the display is going nuts. I can still use every function, it's just the display goes bonkers. Sometimes over time the display eventually goes back to normal. Also I rarely have the issue during winter, it seems to pop up more often on hot summer days but it HAS happened before even when it's been really cold out.

Seems to be a common issue... Mine does this as well... I have had a couple of head units in my car that do the exact same... I gave a Head unit to a member here and it did that as well... We think its communicating with the mother ship

My 98 SE did that too. And I'd agree with Don on the reasoning

So in other words there's nothing I can do about it ?

I've had three head units do that to me so far. Both the original radio/cassette and a replacement radio/equalizer cassette eventually quit showing any display at all. Those were pulled out and at least one of them was fitted with a replacement display backlighting bulb. The original radio/ cassette unit also had the volume issue and eventually died completely on me.

The radio/CD equalizer unit I have in there now is the one Don gave me and it has begun to communicate to the mothership already. It may be an interstellar SOS homing device, but that is still under study. Yesterday, it displayed three upside down and backwards "F"s for a while. Yet it still works fine otherwise.

Its OK Lash... The 7 Band CD unit that was in my car for 5 years finally bit the dust... The Eq/Amp started freaking out on its own... I guess all of the communication with the mother ship burned it out

Have you guys have checked the connections and looked for cold solder joints?

Hmmm... I will have to rip into it and reflow the joints after checking for cracks..
