Just a warning, if all you are using for paint is spray bombs, don't be surprised that the paint gets scratched to hell when the tires are mounted. There is a lot of force applied to the bead of the rim while the tire is going on.
Most wheels are powder coated or painted with a 2 part paint system with a hardener that makes them more able to handle the mounting and dis mounting process.

I've seen, even the machines with the hard plastic guides scratch painted wheels if there is a burr in the guide.

The reason the spray bomb paint is so weak, is because it has so LITTLE amount of solids in the paint. It is over-reduced with solvents to allow for the pigment to come out of that tiny nozzle, compared to an actual paint gun tip that can flow a lot higher amounts of solids.

Look up MIL thickness and you will understand where I'm coming from.
In painting, there is a wet film thickness and a dry film thickness.
As paint dries, the solvents leave the paint, reducing the dry film thickness and therefore reducing the paints overall durability.

Leon

i agree only if the person mounting them isnt aware. ive done many painted wheels and you just have to be extra careful. i have yet to scratch one, even ones plastidipped.

I'm not too concerned if they get scratched up, I can always fix it if they get scratched during tire mounting. They wont be used in the winter so the tires won't have to be changed very often unless I blow a tire or something. The last couple days I was a little busy but I did get some more progress in.
First wheel after 2 coats of silver
Image

I did one more coat of silver on that one and 2 coats of clear, that one is on the right, and the left is 3 coats of silver and no clear yet.
I might wetsand and polish them after the paint gets cured some.

I don't suppose you have any pics comparing the original wheel color to what you have now?

These are turning out amazing!

And I didn't even think about mounting tires until Leon mentioned it. But I had this happen with the RX-8 wheels I had painted white. I had intended to paint them myself, but a friend's dad owns a body shop offered to paint them. I just had to buy the paint, which I would have had to do anyway. When the tires were mounted it took the paint off all the way around the edge of the wheel. So we went elsewhere to mount the other three, and they had a "touchless" machine, which didn't take the paint off the edge, but the tire bead gave them a lot of trouble and the guy used a tire spoon and slipped which put a gouge in the paint anyway...went to another shop that said they could do painted wheels and they managed it just fine.

At any rate, hopefully you don't run into this issue, but from the looks of things you won't have any problems touching up.

Just to be safe I think I'm going to put masking tape over the faces of the wheels when they go to mount the tires. I took a picture in the same light as when I first got the wheels.

I got lots of progress in the last couple days, painting is finished and I just need to wetsand and polish the last three.

Here is the first one, ready for rubber.

Got the tires mounted, the guys at the tire shop were very careful and didn't damage any paint. The only damage was caused by me when somebody pulled out in front of me on the way there and the wheels banged together from slamming on the brakes, chipping the edge. And one of them fell over when I was taking them out of the car at home, putting a chip in the face of one of the spokes. Nothing some touch up can't fix.

Ready to go on the car, but not for a couple more weeks because we have a pothole for every foot of road right now.

Well, I'm not very good at touch up apparently, I could totally see where it was, so I'm just gonna respray that one that fell over.
