I just thought I would share this project of mine. The goal of this project was to completely replace the body fasica of the SE with the fascia of and SSE. During this project several body parts had to be fixed or replaced. Both fenders, rocker panels and floor panels were replaced due to corrosion issues. One other item I would like to note is that the door molding are being installed with the factory clip and NOT with two sided tape or panel bonding adhesive.

Here is the Car at the start of the project:

Applause for seeing this project out! I know just from reattaching the front passenger moulding onto my SLE that they are a pain. Your car looks great, I love the color!

That's awesome! Did you swap over to a dual-outlet muffler too?
Really great work!
[Edit: Wow, you got the nose-piece on the hood too!]

Do you have any secrets about those body molding clips? How exactly does on get the moldings off and on?

I did not swap the exhaust as the two doner cars that I was working with were too far gone as far as the exhaust was concerned. I do plan on doing a stainless from the heads to the tips over the winter, true dual also. This body work is only the first stage in what will get accomplish this winter. Over the winter the engine and transmission will be rebuilt, new exhaust, HUD and HUD dash installed and AL7 seats installed.

The grille, emblem and grille support struts were hard to find. GM didn't have any in the system. Vintage parts only had a few left in stock.

The clips were easy. I was able to get the upper and lower door clips off of two 96 SSE donors. The rocker panel clips were new, GM still has these in service as active numbers. Also, because the weld stud locations are different between the SE and SSE/I, I had to add in new studs. Au-Ve-Co actually makes stud replacements screws that are used when a service door or replacement door skin is installed. I created a CAD drawing as reference for the stud locations based off of the two donor SSEs. However, some adjustment was required. These function the same as the weld studs as they are shouldered screws. Once the new studs are positioned correctly and clips are installed, the moldings are installed as if it were factory. Slid the tops in and pull down to engage the lower clips.

Just adding some supplemental information on the door molding clips.

The Upper clips are (You will need 10 per Car):
GM P/N 25630330
Au-Ve-CO P/N 19389
You may be able to get these through a body shop yet. But you can source these through a Junkyard if they are undamaged. Body shop pricing will be expensive.

The Lower Clips are (You will need 10 per Car):
GM P/N 25630331
Au-Ve-Co P/N 19411
You can get GM new ones from VintagePartsinc.com (This is where GM put all of there "new, Out-of-Production parts". Last I checked with vintage, there were 160 of these left in the world. You may be able to get these through a body shop yet. But you can source these through a Junkyard if they are undamaged. Body shop pricing will be expensive. To keep the clip tight to the body, you may need some 3M ear tape behind the clip to take-up any wear that may have occurred on a used clip.

The Rocker Panel Clips are (You Will need 20 Per car):
GM P/N 25630332
You may be able to use your existing ones, but they may not fully engage.
These ones you can only get through GM as this design uses a plastic smash rivot to secure it. The ones in the junkyard are not reuseable. The good news is that this is still a production part and there is volume still out on the network.

As far as lining up the clips, I grabbed the dimensions of the weldstuds off of a SSE/I car. However, these proved to only be good references. Allot of the alignment was done "by hand" to make the gaps between the door and molding as tight as possible.

Rev.
You can attach the clips to the door/body panels with rivots, or you can use the Au-ve-co self tapping screw. Make sure to use sealer when doing so.
