Hey everyone, just thought I'd share how my latest project turned out. It was pretty simple really, I used a level to find the right angles, a jigsaw with a skinny blade meant for plastic, and scotch tape to protect the paint (should have used more, the shoe of my jigsaw rubbed some of the clear coating off :banghead: .

One of the bigger reasons I did this was to get this:

to this:

I didn't like being able to see the bare pipe before the tips, it doesn't look as clean as having them in the custom cutouts, to me anyway.

Just an option for those of us with SE's who are tired of having our tips bottom out on even the slightest driveway/speed bump. So, how do you like them?

Should've made them round instead of square, but other than that they don't look too bad.

Nice plate frame, BTW.

i know... i did the best i could. i tried to round out the corners (if you look real hard) but i wasn't sure how it would look after i moved them up. if i get a chance at a cheap bumper in my color (not likely) i'll give it another try and hopefully do it better.

the most important thing was getting the bare pipes hidden and getting them as close to the actual bumper (not bumper cover) as i could. there is probably a half inch clearance now, where there was almost 3 inches clearance before.

They need some sort of flare towards the front of the car, or a C channel type thing.

BonneMe: C channel? what's that?
Wake: yeah, yeah, yeah, i have a bubble butt.... but i'm working on that. it's pretty hard to find a spoiler in my color! i might have to end up getting one and just having it painted.

and any ideas on how I could make it look better would be awesome. i'm always looking for ways to improve the look of my car.

I would fashion some piece that makes it more 3 dimensional. If you look at the normal cutouts on cars, the bumper extends towards the front of the car in a C shaped channel.

Or perfect the cuts, and get those tips tucked right into them and mount them very solidly.

This is C-Channel:

I agree you should fab something up with sheetmetal or something to fill that void above them.

Yeah, I'd like it better with a larger radius to the corners, so the cutout line hugs the tip outline closer.
Ultimately I just couldn't do it to mine, so I got my wide flat oval tips that are slung beneath the bumper. I've been very happy with that.

You're bold, to cut into your bumper cover! I just couldn't do it!

well, i made sure to use a practice bumper so i knew it would work. I'm not too experienced with sheet-metal fabrication.... is it very hard to do? any advice on this aspect would be awesome, cuz it sounds like fun. thanks ed, i get what a c-channel is now. any advice on sheet-metal fabrication?

and i had to cut the bumper before i knew exactly where the tips were going to be, so I couldn't be sure whether I'd leave enough room for them or not. It's easier (and cheaper) to get another bumper later and perfect it, than to have to reposition the tips.

Also, their shape is hardly noticeable when you're looking at it from anywhere other than 1 foot behind the bumper at eye level. I haven't had any scraping on them since I did it, which is one of the reasons why I chose to do it.

But still, I'd rather have it look nice from EVERY angle than not....
