My understanding is that only the original poster can copy articles from the old site to this site.

He wrote it up and then had to walk away..finished it.. to find that the login screen killed it.

I need to run out the door, here's the really quick version.
Cut out the back of the light.

Using a dremel with a triangular metal bit that looks like it would grind/cut well..remove only the black layer of plastic. I tend to stop often enough, hold to the light and look for the below.

Clean the whole pontiac off leaving the surface reasonably smooth.

Using painters masking tape..I tape off the inside and trace out the letters with a razor blade. Then 100 light coats of black paint on the inside until you can't see any light through the paint.

Peel the letters and choose your LED bar to hook into the parking and ground circuits. I found the 00+ Impala third brake light to work perfectly.

Seal it back up..I have used JB Weld and fiberglass as the main structural bonding .. being that it doesn't move much you could use almost anything with strength to it.
