I polished my master cylinder and thermostat housing a while back:

I recently got a couple other parts done besides my trans side pan:

The valve covers I've had 80% done for years and i finally finished those up today.

The only other two things I want to do are the throttlebody (which I started) and the tensioner assembly.

Everything will be powdercoated clear.

Wishing I had taken it that far... looks awesome.

Thats the mistake I made, no clear powdercoating, so everything is not nearly as shiny anymore.

How do you polish plastic (fiberglass) valvecovers? Or where did you get metal ones?

I guess I didn't know they had aluminum ones. Makes sense now...

*dang*. :hail:

I'm guessing that wasn't all by hand, dremel or air?

Yep, F-bodies.

Most of the sanding was done by hand but I did use a dremel for right radius spots. With that I used a plane shank, cut strips of sand paper, and taped/wrapped it so it worked with the rotational direction. Either way I had to work my way up from 180 to 800+ grit before buffing. And I used pieces of shirt the same way I did the sandpaper to buff the tight areas.

Here's how far I got with the TB today:

Image

Image

It's about 80% done.

great work. cant wait to see them installed.

also, would you mind posting the tools/dremel bits you use for the hard to reach areas?

Thanks.

The only special tools I used was a dremel with a long plain shank, increasing grits of sandpaper (then cloth), white rouge, and a buffing wheel.

None of the dremel bits I tried work well including burs, sanding drums, mini wire wheels. They all dig in and score the aluminum even on the lowest speed. The home-made shank + taped/wrapped sandpaper works best. Same thing with sanding/scuffing wheels on a die grinder. They'll cut. And on flat surfaces, hand sanding is the way to go.

Wow. Your engine compartment is going to look amazing when it's done.

those look awsome Mike :hail:

gotta tell ya though, that first pic really looks like a brass color (I know its not) and I can only amagine how an engine bay would look all brass colored.

pardon my ignorance here, but im unsure of what a shank is. you say plain shank, and i think of a filed tooth brush from prison gang movies. I tried to google "plain shank" and got a mess of searches unrelated to what i was looking for.

Thanks guys.

I took a dremel bit with a long stem and cut the bit off the end. So it's just a plain stem in other words.

Awesome! Definitely agreed on getting it all clear powder coat once you're done. I can appreciate the time this takes, though I haven't worked on anything as complicated to do as the TB. I've helped dad do the intake manifold, water pump, a set of valve covers and misc. other things for his car. But without the clear, like Andrew said it will dull out fairly quick unless you keep after it like a hawk. And just spraying a clear coat on it dulls it out too.

Thats some great work though!
Like the rest of your car, I await the final product (If you can ever say you're finished with a never ending project.)
