I assume it's a matter of options that they picked - I have seen the 289 with the 3 carb tripower on tv.

If the emissions or RPO tags are missing, I don't know of any other way to tell. Classic car VIN decoder maybe?

Have you contacted Pontiac Historical Services?

http://www.phs-online.com/services.htm

In that era, the VIN# will simply denote whether you had a 6 cylinder or an 8 cylinder as the first digit of the VIN#, not the specific engine. However, PHS may be able to find the order/spec sheet that came with the car, and it should have on it what you're looking for. FWIW, no 1964 Bonneville came with a 6 cylinder... Lower tier models like Leman's and Tempest's did, but not full size Bonneville's (Catalina's, Grand Prix's and Star Chief's also). Standard was the 389, optional was the 421.

Through 1964, Pontiac was pretty simple, starting in 1965 they changed it up a bit. But below is what a 1964 Pontiac would be;

First Digit = cylinder count... 6 = 6 cylinder, 8 = 8 Cylinder
Second Digit = Model... 0 = Tempest, 1 = Tempest Custom, 2 = LeMan's, 3 = Catalina, 6 = Star Chief, 8 Bonneville, 9 = Grand Prix
Third Digit = Year... 4 = 1964, 5 = 1965, 6 = 1966, etc...
Fourth Digit = assembly plant... A = Arlington, TX, B = Baltimore, MD, D = Doraville, GA, K = Kansas City, KS, L = Linden, NJ, M = Kansas City, MO, P = Pontiac, MI, S = Southgate, CA.

The remaining is the production/sequence number.

My guess is yours is 884Pxxxxxx

I picked "P" for Pontiac, MI as I think that was the most common, second most is one of the Kansas City plants.

That 389 brings back memories. *dang* good motor. Had a 65 goat with it and the 3 deuces. 411 posi rear end, Munsing 4 speed. Scary ass ride. Sorry for the nostalgic moment.

I can't wait for the day and money to restore mine. 389, high compression "D" port heads (if I recall), but hampered with a 2bbl. My great grandparents were "frugal" when it came to cars...
