I have a '64 Bonneville Coupe that has a VERY strong odor of raw gas after just a few minutes in my garage. There is no fuel dripping anywhere but the vapor smell is bad. I have replaced the fuel tank, sending unit, checked the entire fuel line, replaced the carb, gas cap,etc and no change. I have had the car to 2 competent mechanic shops and they have checked everything -- it's a real head scratcher! Please, any input would be appreciated as I can't even park it my garage

It doesn't take much gas to create a strong smell in an enclosed space.
If you can isolate it to either the front or the back, your diagnosis would be somewhat easier.
If the replacement parts were used, it's possible that one of them is leaking where you can't see it, such as at the top of the fuel tank.
It's possible that the fuel pump is seeping gas only when the engine is hot.
It might only be slightly leaking internally and the vapors escape through the vent holes.
Carburetor base gasket (if it hasn't been changed)?
Are you sure that the fuel lines are 100% sealed?
A tiny pinhole where gas seeps out would do it.
Other than that, the only things left are the filler neck and its grommet.
Hope this helps you.

If you smell it, but don't see it, I would look closely under the hood when it's running. I've had carb leaks and fuel line leaks at the engine that were difficult to find, because the engine heats up and the gas evaporates very quickly. I would start by using a good foaming engine cleaner and get it really clean, then fire it up and use a good light and see if you don't see a leak at a carburetor fitting or base gasket or possibly at a bend in a hard fuel line. The '64 Bonneville would have a mechanical fuel pump. I'm pretty sure it's on the front of the motor close to the bottom on the driver's side. It's a diaphragm pump that works off of the cam shaft. I've had one develop a small hole in the diaphragm and gas was pumped into the motor and eventually into the oil pan. Even though I never saw the gas, I could certainly smell it because those cars didn't have a PCV system, but had a vented cap on the driver's side valve cover to vent the engine. I'd check the dipstick and see if you smell gas there. If you do, replace the fuel pump. I love it when someone asks about older cars! That's more in my area of expertise!
let us know what you find.
