Year and Trim: 1960 Bonneville Convertible
I have a pitted and flaking instrument cluster bezel similar to the one in this picture.
http://bit.ly/1Mr3kco

Its from a 1960 Bonneville. I am hoping to restore it but I'm a bit confused by the finish in the inside part. The outer edges are clearly chrome and the part itself is almost certainly pot metal. No surprises there. However, the inside area has a matte gray/silver finish which I don't recognize. I wonder if anyone knows what that finish is and how to restore it.

Many thanks in advance.

Paul

In that picture you linked to it's painted - the flat silver directly on the metal casting, no clear coatings or anything else.

All the ones I've seen online have the matte silver, not just that one.

I took pictures of mine. If I had to guess it looks like the entire thing was chrome and then something was applied over it to make it seem matte. Was this the way it was done at the factory? I'm hoping to reproduce the original as close as possible.

Looks like mask and paint to me, paint that has a flat finish instead of gloss, no clear coat or base coat.
