My 1985 Bonneville has locking hubcaps. My lock-nuts froze up and are unusable.
Could I use standard hex-nuts on the wheels and be okay?

I lost a hubcap too here is a picture of my remaining hubcap:

Would you recommend steel snap-on hubcaps, or locking hubcaps?

You should be able to use a standard lug nut. You want to make sure the threads are the same. Hubcaps are just a matter of preference. You might check out the local JY or craigslist and see if you could get a cheap set of rims instead of caps.

Myself, I am not a fan of caps.

What's the best way to find hex-nuts with the correct thread for my car? Also, are hex-nuts the same as lug-nuts?

Take a lugnut in to your favorite auto parts store and say "I need 20 of these". They will be able to match them up.

Lug nuts are specially designed to hold their wheel in, and have a different seat. I wouldn't just get a set of nuts with the same thread pitch and diameter and throw them on. Get lug nuts.

A secondary question:
If you look up at my pictures, you see a cup-shaped part that fits over the lug nuts and has a long screw at the end.
Would you recommend getting washers to go behind 3 of the lug nuts so that this cup can fit on? I'd like to still use the cups to stabilize the hubcap, which I believe screws onto the cup's long screw.

You will have to ask them if they can special order them. You can also try other parts stores also. A lot of stores carry the Dorman product line. As for the hubcap mount, ask them if they carry those also.

Do not use washers behind the lug nuts. They will not center the wheel or seat correctly.

I think in the end I will just buy a new hubcap, and bypass the locks altogether. I've been driving around for 3 mo. with no locks and so far the other three have stayed on fine.
Do you think thats a good idea, or that the locks are necessary?
