I wasn't sure where to post this since it's on my 2008 Grand Prix GXP... my apologies in advance.... I was driving my Grand Prix tonight and experienced a noise when turning the steering wheel the noise is hard to describe... I pulled into a school parking lot and the steering wheel felt like the was no power assist, while stopped, when the car started to move it steered normal, I checked the power steering fluid and it was fine. It started to thunderstorm and rain heavy, so I brought it home and will look into further in the morning. I had planned to take it or the Bonneville to Myrtle Beach in a few weeks. So I was hoping to figure it out and repair it. Will add further upon inspection.

Have you ever changed the fluid or checked underneath for leaks or seeping?

Do your struts mounts make any popping noises over bumps or when turning?

Are you losing fluid.

Here is why I ask that... On LS4 cars, there is a hose that runs down along the block from the pump. It likes to rub against the block. Rubbing causes... loss of power steering.

I had this happen on the Impala.

Everything is dry underneath, no seepage, and the fluid was at proper level. Shortly after buying the car I replaced all the fluids. I will check the strut mounts, there is a noise from the top of the strut when turning, similar to a muffled pull chain for a ceiling fan rubbing. Lane, I know the hose your talking about, it's dry there too. I was wondering if a pulley going out. Making the belt slip. Had the A/C on when all this started. I will check the strut mounts, I know eventually I will need to replace the struts, and I haven't seen the Blistine that came on it.

Ok, just a first thought I had because I had been down that road with ours. :)

The hose you were speaking of Lane is it only a dealer available part. It was the first hose I checked. And as it's not leaking. If the pulleys need replaced ( two smooth and one ribbed ) are the bolts short enough to replace in car?? Then I heard someone say that the harmonic balancer fails, and wobbles on the LS4. ? I haven't ruled out the strut assembly. I will continue to check and advise. I appreciate your help nos4blood, and Lane.

Are you referring to the backside idler and then the one the runs to the front b that is right behind the Kent Moore serpentine tool for LS4's? If so, I don't think it can be done without dropping the subframe a little. The

As to HB wobble, they all do on LS motors it seems. I wouldn't worry about it unless it is having an adverse affect on the belt.

Actually, found a diagram.

The two idlers that pinch the belt up to the alternator I think can be done (Albeit still tight), in the car. The tensioner and idler above the crank are in the frame rail and would need the subframe dropped.

Ok, I was wondering if there would be enough room to remove the bolt to replace, on one of the pulleys ( smooth one near crank ) just beneath the fuse box. One other thing, replacement of struts, since the original Bilstein probably are no longer available. What would you recommend??

Whatever is available. :)

KYB has always had good stuff for that platform (I had them on my GTP), Monroe, etc... Many of the GM/AC Delco replacements are actually Monroe.
