This is a thread in the general section for the cheap china knock-off's (or clones).

general-chat/topic43833.html

There are plusses and minusses to them though. However those that have them (many here), seem to be happy with them.

I think the biggest issues I have with them is that they are not supported should you need replacement parts (VCM module namely), and should you need software updates which I don't think should be an issue by now as by 2009 T2's were phased out in favor of MDI. So most T2's are updated through 2009. Those points may or may not be important to you. However, if you use them heavy duty (I did with mine), stuff wears out and you need replacements and having one of these clones you're SOL. For example, My genuine Tech 2 (A Vetronix version), is supported by Bosch (who now owns it), and I have had replacement parts through them. When I had to replace my VCM module, I contacted them, filled out a form which included the serial number of my unit, and they programmed a new VCM module and sent it to me, at which point, I sent the old one back. So to me, support is critical as mine has a lot of hard mileage on it.

Tech 2's were made by three companies over their lifespan;
- Hewlett Packard (the originals)
- Vetronix (the majority as Vetronix made them the bulk of the time they were in use)
- Bosch (bought out Vetronix if I recall).

Also, if you plan on doing anything 2005 (on some GM platforms), or 2006+ (all GM platforms), you will need a CANdi module that plugs in between the T2 and the DLC connector. Some 2005 GM and all 2006+ are now CAN (Controlled Area Network) protocol.

Ok, Thanks Lane. I had seen the Bosch unit, then some on Amazon that said they were made in China, I don't want the China made one. Were would you buy one from?? Can one be bought directly from Bosch?? I find it necessary to have one as these two cars age and repairing them myself.
